ADSL drops when phone is used (in or out)

[link to this post]

Hi all,

Been having this problem for some time:

Whenever the phone rings, or a call is made, my adsl connection drops out. This doesn't happen every time, it's about 90% of the time for an incoming call, perhaps a bit less frequent for outgoing calls.

I've changed my router, my filters, my cabling, my phone, and plugged into the test socket on my OpenReach box. I've double-filtered the phone. All phones have filters.

The line is quite noisy when the router is connected, double-filtering doesn't seem to have helped.

Eventually I called my ISP (NewNet) and an OpenReach engineer came out. He ran his laptop test which showed no line errors. However, when he plugged his own modem and phone in, he got the same problem. He left saying he thought it was a problem at the exchange, and that he was going to swap our line over. It turns out he didn't bother, and now BT have closed the call saying it's a problem with my equipment. I'm disputing this, obviously.

Anybody got any idea what's going on? Because of the noisy line I originally suspected filters, but I've used three different filters with no difference in symptoms.

Any info useful!

Thanks
W

More than likely a HR Leg fault where there is a poor joint in the one of the wires in the pair.

Have you tried the BT Quiet Line Test @ 17070 Opt 2. If you hear any noise report it as a Voice problem only.

Yep, I've tried that - the only noise is the router interference; once the router drops the signal the line is quiet.

All the symptoms point to it being the filter, but I've tried swapping them and doubling up, it makes no difference.

Yep. Same problem. Also engineer's own modem suffered the drop-out.

I would agree with GD.

But just one final test I would suggest. Into the test socket connect a good filter and connect only the router. Access the web and then ring your number, do it a few times. Does the broadband drop out?

As, suggested, it is an HR fault, the engineer *should* have known this, and the obligatory Pair Quality Test, shown it. Get your ISP to book another LLU SFI task (better still, an SFI 2 task), and get the line fault fixed. If it's the same engineer, politely suggest that they ring one of their colleagues with more experience. wink
