try rebooting the router, (just once)
invariably the line will drop when there is too much noise, but not when things get better.

default level of 6db
Depends! Not all ISPs default to 6 dB. Who's yours?

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU BB => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU BB

Dunno; does BT's system on ADSL2+ even work ('cos it certainly doesn't on their ADSLmax product).

I've seen one line, for example, which BT's comedy system decided was unsuitable for anything lower than a 15dB margin, giving a 6.8Mbps sync (it was reset back to 6dB and even though it only dropped sync once, went straight back to 15dB within a few days).
That very same line (which didn't work with BT's stupid system) now has a rock solid 13Mbps sync with O2 (on, you guessed it, a 6dB margin).

If BT's ADSL2+ "system" is anything like their ADSLmax DLM it may well have decided your error count is too high (above an undisclosed threshold) for a margin drop to occur.

No the line was a very stable 6db for over 6months never varying until we had a major service outage in this area and the hub reset over 20 times in an hour when service was restored i know several people in this area who have had the same thing happen to there lines as well i know the level does reduce but could not remember the time scale for it to happen I gave up 02 as there service here was hopeless more disconnections the days online and they were not prepared to listen saying its your pc not the line or there network went to bt 2 losses of service in over a year no comparison

Were you on O2 Access or their unbundled product?
If you were on Access then the fault wouldn't have been with O2 (if the disconnections you were suffering were from resyncs) as O2 Access is simply a BT Wholesale product (meaning you're still connected to the same ADSL equipment in the exchange).
Maybe if you were suffering loss of sync while you were with O2 this is indicative of a general line problem and could be a reason why BT's DLM is not reducing your noise margin now.

it was there llu product as i said in a previous post the line was very stable for the lat 6 months until a major BT service outage lasting some 8 hours when service restarted there were multiple re-syncs over 20 in just one hour then the line was stable again and has been now for 5 days now with not one re-sync in that period
