I have a friend that got billed over £200 after being told a new NTE5 would be free and it was hard work getting it back - but he did.

Ok andy thanks for the help, I am going to call BT if they want to charge me the earth for replacing it, well then i may take my own measures on how I go about things, I see that the main cable in has 5 wires connected they are:
Point Colour
1 White with blue stripes
2 Blue with white stripes
3 White with orange stripes
4 Orange with white stripes
5 White with green stripes
6 Green with white stripes

I think the "pair" in are points 1 and 2, which would be on the newer socket points 1 would be connection 5 and point 2 would be point 2. Can you advise what you think are the cables "2" and "5", as I understood it from my old houses wiring there were two coming in and it was normally 2 (blue with white stripes) and 5 (white with blue stripes). But with that colouring of cables don't go with that, could you suggest that the white and orange cables coming in will probably be the feed? like in the blue/white in the other house?

There are extensions everywhere may of been needed in 1980, but with modern technology and wireless phones, not needed now. I fear these are probably causing feedback and worsening connection speed, okay 1.6mb isn't the worst connection in the world but to improve it would be a result.

In my case with attenuation 54 dB, currently connected rock solid at 5255 kbps using firmware 4.25.19, tried all the others available and this was the best.

Just tried the BT Business hub, stats as follows:

I think the DG834GT gives me better options on changing things, also better user freindly interface so will stick with that - at least i've tried tho.

Just used points 1 and 2 and connected them to a&b just to test on the new master socket I'd got.

Results are now:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2964 kbps 655 kbps
Line Attenuation 62.0 db 39.0 db
Noise Margin 4.9 db 5.8 db

Don't get as good upload speed as I used to get, but download is good, so I am now happy. Will continue to see if I can tweak anything else, if not will just fix the new master socket at that point.

Layout of the house is like this you will see the main BT feed in red new master socket where the X is. Then the extensions downstairs in green and blue with the upstairs one in orange, i can only think the other wires were giving quite a bit of feedback and causing the supressed speed?! Don't know, or care now, I have a reasonable speed that hopefully will remain stable "touches wood".

I've now read the whole thread and am still not minded to change my opinion. I'm with Yarwell on this, BT Care doesn't have the authority to alter the price list. When the line item price is updated to say no visit charge applies in such and such circumstance then there will be clarity.

we have three main styles of cable that are current in internal wiring.

1. a 2 pair, orange/blue and green/brown
2. a 2/3 pair, blue/white, orange/white and if its 3 pr green/white
3. you may encounter what is called cable downlead it is a 2 pair white/orange . black/green.

the numbers on the little bt78 (block terminal 78b) have no relevance themselves, its just a way off connecting wires together, its also used to narrow down the pairs as the standard krone type connection should have a maximum of 2 connections only, more than that leads to HR (high resistance issues).

Have asked, and am sure its £25+Vat from openreach if all they do is arrive, replace old socket with new one.

If you want socket moving, old extensions reconnected or anything else then you are paying extra, hence why so many get a bigger bill.

At end of the day all the retail phone providers can charge what they want, so while Openreach may charge this price, the fee to you the customer may be more.

IN REPLY TO THE BT CARE THREAD ISSUE.

i think there is some confusion here, what that article refers to is not changing out an old LJU (line jack unit) it is the process of changing out the mega old style bakelite phones. it is a disconnection reconnection. it is not the process for uplifting pre nte5 style home wiring

You'll note the BT cable didn't reach long enough so had to steal some from one of the existing extensions that will not be used and bridged it across using the little connecting adapater and popped it into the back of the filtered faceplate.

Slight decrease from previous house and a slight decrease in uptream connection speed, but hey ho, it's livable and I'm happy.
