IDS scan parser : udp port scan

I found this in my 'connections log' on the Thomson Speedtouch:-

IDS scan parser : udp port scan - there were varioius IP locals listed not all of which were in the range I have configured on the router.

So just what is the this "thing" and what is it doing???

Edit - this was not "connections" log but "security" ~ doh!!!
