Help Re: Speedtouch 585, DNS & DMT (Port 23 problems)

[link to this post]

Hi

Running Windows 7 32 bit with BE. I found a program that checks the DNS settings of your router, which suggests better servers. However I've come across a very annoying result. If I change the DNS settings using the web interface of the Speedtouch, I can no longer Telnet or use the DMT tool. The message I get is wrong password/Username (in DMT) & connection lost in Telnet.
The only solotion I've found is by changing the ethernet connection on the router. But I'm now on the last port!!

Any ideas why this is happening and what the solution maybe??

Best Regards

Are you using the IP address of the router or the DNS name?

Do a factory reset and then follow the instructions here to change DNS using which ever method suits you

Sorry, don't understand the question!

From the web interface, I go into setup and change the DNS - this reboots the router and that's when the port becomes blocked to either Telnet or the DMT tool

you can access the router either by its IP address or by a name it has enterd in its DNS, so you might put "gateway" in your browser address bar, for example.

What is the best method for a factory reset? Also can you explain why changing DNS servers blocks port 23?

As Yarwell say are you using 10.0.0.138 or 192.168.1.254 or the URL speedtouch.lan (IIRC).

I'm using 192.168.1.254 in DMT and after changing the DNS settings via the web interface
(http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/ST/?ce=1&be=0&l0=0&l1=-1 - setup) I can longer use DMT or Telnet to 192.168.1.254 to access the Bebox without changing the ethernet connection to a different port (I'm now using port 4).

Can anyone explain why this is happening?????

so if you reboot it can you go back to the previous port ? what if you change the DNS wirelessly ?

No - once setup has run it boots the router and even if I reboot the PC Port 23 refuses to open for DMT/Telnet. I've moved the ethernet cable each time from port 1 to 4, I'm now out of ports!

Cannot boot wirelessly as PC has no wireless. But I'm odds why changing the DNS blocks DMT from changing the signal to noise margin - I get max speed at 1db download and once router reboots I'm stuck at a slower speed and SN of 6db!

Do you mean this:

Optimise for speed
Standard setting
Optimise for reliability
Turn the Gaming Mode On

Well " Optimise for speed" I think only drops to 3db, whilst with DMT I can go to 1db, am I correct???

True, but the other issue, I'll have no Telnet access to the router as port 23 will still be blocked!

The port is not being blocked - when you plug into another ethernet socket, the port works.
You're PC is maybe losing it's IP address? Check the IP address of your PC before and after changing the DNS.

Thanks - how do I check the IP address on the PC? (on DMT it stays at 192.168.1.254)

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center
click local area connection
then properties
then internet protocol version4(tcp/IPv4)
then click properties
then give it a manual ip from the list in your router and set the dns settings

With the router turned on, push a paper clip into the reset hole on the back for 10 seconds until the lights flash

I think you may have put the router in bridge mode - the factory reset will sort this out

At last I've solved this annoying problem. If I change the DNS settings in both the BE router and Network & Sharing Centre as described above, I could not use Telnet or DMT.

The reason is the password for the router gets reset to 'blank' instead of 'Administrator'.

Really odd, but solved smile

Thanks to all that contributed
