Master socket works, NTE5 faceplate and extensions don't.

Hopefully this is the right place to post and somebody can help me.

I have a master socket with a "BT" NTE5 faceplate. The engineer fitted the phoneline and since then I can't use the master socket for phone or broadband.

If I remove the faceplate and plug the microfilter into the test socket of the master socket everything works.

In addition, none of the extension sockets work.

I am now getting SKY installed and as I don't fancy a 20 metre extension cable running up the stairs to the main socket want to solve the problem.

The NTE5 faceplate fo the master socket is wired up with blue wire to terminal 2, red to terminal 3 and white to terminal 5. Does this seem right? Every guide I see has different colours for the wiring.

I am going to try a new faceplate tomorrow, but wondered if anybody had any other helpful suggestions.

Was this fitted recently? Perhaps the unit is faulty.

It may be helpful if you post a link to photos of the socket so that the wire connection can be seen.

Strange that you/BT didn't test the NTE5?

I would be straight back in touch with BT!

sounds like a faulty faceplate, **
if replacing, I would recommend a filtered faceplate,
and don't wire pin 3 unless you require the ring for extensions, (sky box wont need this)

edit ** or the extension socket may have a fault (or anything plugged into that) (shorted between 2+5 for example),
try the faceplate without the extension wiring, but take a photo first so you know where the wires were

sounds more like a faulty extension, i go through hundreds and only once have proved the faceplate itself to be faulty, and this was due to cat pee

The master socket was fitted approx. 6 years ago, but hasn't been used in the last 4 or so. The line was reconnected in December and BT didn't seem at all interested in doing anything about the problem.

I hope to hell it isn't the extensions, there are about 8 sockets, so don't want to trawl through them one at a time.

yank the wire from terminal 3 as a start, though i dont expect this to resolve the issue.

firstly disconnect all equipment on the extensions, phones,sky,maybe an alarm,tank monitors etc etc then see what you get. if when you attach the faceplate with no equipment on the extensions you still get no dialtone then id be looking at the extensions first.

Who installed the extension wiring?

That is not telephone cable but alarm wire and you will have great problems because of that especially if you want your modem elsewhere.
