Why differences with next door neighbour?

So, terraced house, right-next-door neighbour. BT line, both NTE5 master sockets, no fancy extension cabling. About 1.5km from exchange, underground cabling.

My device shows these stats when I was having some probs and checking next door:

Capable 16Meg 19Meg
sync 14 17Meg

OK I know that getting 14Meg is pretty fair when I see people here struggling with only the 1 or 4 part of that. Still, I'd like to know what's giving the difference. Neighbour does have BT as ISP.

Show both of your stats for attn, NM & power, Up & Down.

Your ISP is BT too?

If you have checked to make sure your bt master socket wiring is in good condition and have done the necessary bell wire remove and extensions and filter check etc then one of the reasons why the difference in speed could be because.

If you and your neighbours line is coming from the same outside telephone pole and you and your neighbours line from the pole to the house is around about the same length then your neighbours line might be connected to a better shorter route down to the exchange on the E pair side from cab to the exchange than you.

Without knowing you and your neighbours router line stats then we won't know for sure but if there is quite a difference in line attenuation between you and neighbours line then it's a possibility what I said above is correct.

Plenty of reasons ...

Modem type
Actual cable routing
Even if routing is identical, where in the 100pair cable is each pair
Any joints on the line
Electrical equipment in the house close to the cabling and router

and more

I have two lines - same house - different speeds.

That is the way it is. Some lines better than others.

Yes, I can see that several factors may influence.

If I may repeat a couple of my points missed.

underground cabling, my device (using this _only_ for those sync results)
neighbour has BT as ISP

these are what my device shows

noise margin upstream: 26 db neighbour 24
attenuation upstream: 10 db
output power upstream: 9 db neighbour 11

noise margin downstream: 8 db neighbour 10
attenuation downstream: 24 db
output power downstream: 19 db

Knowing your stats is not enough to say anything on really,

1. You missed out the important sync speed

As attenuations are the same then cable length is pretty much identical, you are now down to variations in hardware both in the home, and at the exchange, and differences in RF noise environment in the two properties.
