Ideal Broadband Monitor Profile

Hello,

I have been using my broadband monitor for a while now and would like to know what an ideal daily monitor image looks like please?

I assume no red, but what about yellow, blue and green?

In an ideal world I suppose a flat graph is best.

Do those blue peaks correspond to usage peaks at your end, e.g. large downloads?

I think you are correct. Yesterday afternoon I was streaming BBC iplayer and during the evening my son was gaming.
I have done a 1Gb test download and also streaming ipayer resulting in this graph:

Lots of blue.
But is this blue a good thing?

If you are busy using your connection it leaves less time for others to also be using your connection and so delays may be introduced.

The tbb monitor pings your router (I assume you gave the IP address of your router). Pings were only intended for diagnostic purposes, is a machine there or not, and are given a low network priority by many routers. If your router or others between you and the pinger are busy the ping may be delayed or even lost.

Very little usage on that circuit, the server is a standby box.
Your picture shows the same lines as my home BE connection, so I assume you're using a Thomson router (see my BQM link in my .sig).

The green should stay the same unelss these is significant congestion. The yellow increases in blocks when the link is being used flat out. So if you were to download 8gb from Microsoft (technet) or a set of Linux ISOs, you'd see the yellow increase. This happens because when the line is in use the ping time to your router increases dramatically.

Don't confuse the graph with a usage graph however..!
