Please can someone help me sort this out? i cannot access a site that i have been using now for four years and i know others can as i have friends use it.in really simple terms,what can i do please?

restart your router.
restart your PC
if it still fails, change the DNS servers on your pc to use different ones e.g. googles public ones at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Alternatively wait 24-48 hours and it might well resolve itself as whatever's changed is propogated correctly

Hi Ionic.i cannot thank you enough for the simple but VERY effective solution.i had no idea that just turning off, and then back on, the router ,could fix it or i would have tried it before! sometimes the simple solutions are the best!

How come it happened in the first place or would that be too technical for me to understand(a mee ewoman,addicted to the internet but doesn't understand computers!!)

Thanks for that,as you will see above,now sorted.Wish i understood computers a bit better.i was reading all sorts of very complicated solutions and yet it was so easy!

A DNS sever basically is a massive address book

that when you type say www.bbc.co.uk it then transfers it to IP like 212.58.244.71

then finds the site

or something like that roughly.

What probably happened is that your router cached (ie remembered) the wrong address for the site. This might be because of a technical problem but also could be due to the site moving to a different server and your router still using the old address.

I normally go for change on teh PC in case the resolver in the router is having a funny 5 rather than it's upstream resolvers.

I don't! I imagine most users don't mess around with IPCONFIG etc. but accept the DNSs supplied in the router.

Thanks guys for the explanation,i can understand that.Computers eh? Can't live with them can't live without them!
