uk fibre optic network

Who owns this?
Is it owned by the state or by the companies that installed it (Global Crossing or EasyNet), apart from a map (found here - http://www.globalcrossing.com/docs/fn/tanet-uk-map.pdf) with a key to the POP's there is very little information available online.

I would love to know if and/or how we would get access to it, what the street level boxes look like etc.

I live in the borders where the internet is not good, despite this pipeline potentially running past my house. One of the POPs is in the town of Greenlaw, would it's resident have access to it?

Residents - if you paid enough money, as in £1000's then yes

It is owned by the companies, there is no nationalised fibre network

That's GC's own fibre network; there are also many more of these in the UK, some covering more ground, some covering less.

Generally, if you order from GC, you'll get a tail from BT everywhere other than major cities (in my experience).

You could order a service from them - generally they provide point to point 'leased lines' but I'm sure they have an internet presence you could connect to - if you have a lot of spare cash.

There is no GC street level network in the vast majority of the country.

On the map shown, the network routes shown for our area follow the railway lines, not roads.
