Can i use my own router instead of BT HomeHub 3

Hey all

about a month ago i was out of contract with orange and as my speeds had dropped to below 1mb, i wasted no time in requesting a MAC. Orange have always said that they did not limit my speeds yet when i joined them from BT, i was getting a rock steady 3.8mb. Over time my speed dropped as above. Anyway, oddly, as soon as my MAC had been emailed, my speed jumped almost overnight to 3.4mb and continued to climb back to 3.8mb, as tested on the BTW speedtester.

Anyway, i decided to join BT again, and i switched over about a week ago, all the while testing my speeds 3 times a day as i have for months, and they held steady at around 3.7mb, until tonight when i decided to plug my new BT Hub 3 in...... Speeds have dropped to 1.75mb. Anyways, i realize that it will take a few days to settle but already it says my IP profile is set at 2mb, which is a pile of [censored].

Just wondered if by switching back to my original Netgear router would make any difference, and even if not, wondered if anyone knows what settings i need to use?

Sounds like the ADSL line is wandering around. ADSL lines while they settle into a range of speed usually never stop adapting to the line conditions.

You need to find the connection speed, attenuation and noise margin figures from the Home Hub and/or your netgear.

On long lines some modems cope better with the line conditions, and if we can see the line stats we can advice if you may gain from some tidying up of phone wiring in the property

Ran a btspeedtest and it came back with 0.35mbps with a ping of 55ms just now.

The 3.5Meg connection is below what you would expect for a 50dB attenuation line and there are signs that the noise margin is wandering around plus lots of errors which the interleaving is handling but back up the general picture that things are varying.

The IP profile is probably why your test results are so low, and with the old service you are on it takes between a day and five days for this figure to improve. You can check the IP Profile figure which is the important bit you need to follow links to http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ and say yes and let the java app run

Then when complete click the further diagnostics button and with luck it will run.

running speedtests from my test socket gave me:

reran the tests 10 minutes llater and got:

i've also run a noise test and that seems pretty quiet to me, only the faintest of hums but that could be anything in the house.

Are those noise margin figures when using the test socket or your normal location?

If not, then try the test socket and leave the router there for a while to see if the speeds are more stable. if they are then time to do a bit of fiddling with the phone wiring
