Just idle curiosity to be honest. I've found out that my BQM graph shows very distinct differences when I watch Netflix on my laptop rather than on the TV. Both are on ethernet to my router but the TV seems to have little or no impact on my BQM whereas watching on my laptop causes a large block of yellow peaks and also an increase in the blue. Is it possible that my DNS settings could have a bearing on this?

Shouldn't be anything to do with DNS.
Sounds more like a difference in the amount of bandwidth it is using. The PC app may be making more use of the pipe and providing a higher quality image. What res screen does the laptop have? Might be it is pulling a 4K stream?
Have you tried downloading the tbbMeter app from tools on the home page to see exactly how much bandwidth the PC is using?

As well as what ian72 says, the laptop may be buffering much more and taking large volumes of data in small bursts rather than a steady relatively low stream.

What res screen does the laptop have? Might be it is pulling a 4K stream?
Laptop's 1920x1080 whilst the TV is 4K. I started watching the series on the TV in UHD (I think). I've only chosen the option to continue watching on my laptop and not selected anything from scratch. Maybe try watching something on the laptop that I have selected when I've plowed my way through Borgia.

OK, in that case I think you definitely need to monitor actual usage whilst streaming to the laptop.

One thought, it may also be a difference in the streaming protocols, e.g. if one is using UDP packets this may make the network differently to one based on a TCP (HTTP) stream

Any recommendations as to how? I've just been looking at 'Networx', but can't get it to run at the mo. I've got a Netgear R6250 router and the traffic metering on that doesn't look as if it will help me.

the very simplest way is to open task manager, and look at networking

As I said in my first post think broadband have their own TBBMeter application. Go to the homepage and select tools and there is a download for it there. It also has it's own forum on this site.

I've got tbbMeter running but no matter what I try there's no data. Reading through the relevant forum, it looks as if I'm not the only one with this issue - Win8.1. My router is a Netgear 6250 which doesn't support snmp as far as I can tell so monitoring all traffic is out but at the moment Networx keeps hanging anyway. I think I'll forget about it for now 8^) . The last couple of days my BQM looks a real mess anyway - I should just stop looking at it I think.

Re tbbMeter & Win 8.
I've been using NetWorx instead and found on two different Win 8.1 machines it causes them to hang at random times for no obvious reason.
