Drop in speed by more than 50% after line fault / issue

This is in relation to a connection have in a small office, surrounded by big companies who have leased lines as BT have enabled the exchange but not the cabinet in the area.

Have two lines, one Talk Talk (LLU) and one through a BT reseller

The LLU has never been great (3meg DL) but the BT line has been in for around 2 years, maybe closer to 3.

The BT one has always been 10-12 meg, I do run regular tests and connection is hard wired.

Been stable until a week or so ago then was coming and going, phone line was going dead too.

Reported and BT engineer out and back up and running after a day or so.

I asked the reseller what the problem was and was mention of a pair......

The long and short, the previously 10-12meg ADSL is not only reaching 4.5 - 4.8meg, bad enough having to stomach 10 to be honest, what is likely to have happened here and anyway can get in back to where it was.

Any engineers or suppliers with knowledge care to advise.

First step is what are the connection speed, attenuation and SNR (Noise margin) figures reported by the router?

Just the BT one first, will look at TalkTalk later.

My guess, the E-side (between the cabinet and the exchange) has been swapped out to clear the reported line fault. It is sometimes the case that different E-side cables running to the same cab can have very varied capabilities in respect of broadband.

Sounds about right, called them up and they said is that's the case nothing they can do, is that pretty much it?

Hmm, what you would need to do is speak to BT Broadband (not always the greatest experience, but persevere) You must persuade them to arrange a broadband fault visit, most likely a 'broadband boost' task. Act somewhat dumb, because the second you mention the previous fault they will latch on to that, and that will result in the wrong kind of fault being raised.
"My broadband used to be much quicker, can you fix it please" etc, etc.

When the engineer visits, give them the full details and the suspected diagnosis, E-side previously swapped out to clear a voice fault. That engineer can use a system called the Line Loss Calculator to establish the best E-side range and hopefully, if there's good spares, swap your line on to it and do an SNR reset whilst there too.

Maybe before the fault your line was on a different bundle that took a more direct route to the exchange.

What are figures for the TalkTalk line?

Yes can see the profile has changed so it's pretty much performing as is expected there which is not ideal.

Would need to get back on the TT line as the router is not hooked up just now, it's that bad only use the line for voice call package

Know what you mean regarding trying to talk to anything BT related, it's like pulling teeth and best avoided.
