Re: VDSL - "capped" lines ?

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

But now i'm on 80/20, I'm really expecting higher.

The technology does not work this way. The 40Mbps speed uses the same technology as the 80Mbps speed.

The ISP just places an artificial cap to stop you going any faster than 40Mbps.

A user who is capable of 70Mbps, when they get 40Mbps, they sync at the full 40Mbps speed, the cap set by the ISP. When they order 80Mbps and the cap is removed, they now reach 70Mbps.

With your line:

You had 40Mbps service but syced at 29Mbps. You did not even reach the ISP capped speed. When you upgraded to 80Mbps, that cap was removed, but since your line is only capable of 29Mbps it made no difference to you. The underlying technology never changed, so if you can only get 29Mbps on the 40Mbps speed, you will only get it on the 80Mbps speed.

Only users already at the full sync speed will get a benefit.

Anyway, it does seem odd the estimate is much higher - could be internal wiring issue or a fault. Does your landline work fine and free of fuzziness?

Are you sure that the Brightbox 2 STATUS Screen is showing "ADSL"?

I have just checked that same STATUS screen on my BB2.

The first line shows as "Broadband Type" = "Fibre".

I suggest you cross-check on the BB 2 "ADVANCED" Screen that the first working line is set to "Fibre", by ticking further along that line " Enable ADSL/Fibre auto sensing"

Yeah, I didnt realise this though. I was under the impression that if a company are giving me 29mb and 29mb is as much as I can achieve, that they wouldn't offer me upto 80. It seems the sales people have no idea either.

My landline is crackle free, I have neighbours achieving as high as 65mb. There has to be a fault, but whether it will be dealt with is doubtful. I'm not far from the exchange or the cabinet, but I cant see openreach doing anything with the copper in between and I don't suppose I have any power to expect them to.

Thanks for your reply.

When you say your line is "crackle-free", does that include when any internal phone wiring and devices are connected and working; or is it simply at the NTE (Test) Socket?
