Backup to Fibre broadband

Looking for some ideas - our fibre at work is important to us especially with all the cloud apps now in use but recent outages highlighted it was not guaranteed! We are therefore looking at how to back it up!
Obviously having a second connection - and our router can do dual WAN - seems logical, but that would use the same cable to the exchange so remains vulnerable. We are therefore considering a 4g back up link as that will route to the mobile network & probably to a different exchange, however can anyone suggest how this can be configured to replicate the fixed IP that our ISP uses so that mail servers & vpn remain active.

The static IP is linked to the actual connection, so you would not replicate it but buy a 4G service with a public IP option and add this to the backup MX records and make sure VPN systems knew to try the main and fail over to the secondary.

Probably best to talk to a provider like https://aa.net.uk/ who can advise on the technicalities and options available to you. Another option is FluidOne http://www.fluidone.com/data/advance-copper-fibre-fa... who have a raft of other options.

NOTE: Running mail servers on a business premises is very old fashioned now, much better to host that side of thing in a core data centre with much higher uptime guarantees, i.e move core office stuff to a data centre and then any almost connection will suffice at office, of course running appropriate security measures to make sure nothing that should not be visible to the public is visible to the public.

Again, a 4G (or similar) for back up might fail too.

When we had a major outage here, we lost our FTTC/VDSL connection, but retained voice telephony so an ADSL connection on a second line would have been available. The outage also affected mobile operators and their networks were seriously compromised for voice and data with complete non-availability at some locations.

What were the reasons for the outage?

I understand your concerns regarding the comms links to your "cloud" facilities.

Some years back, whilst visiting one location of a major, wide-spread company, I noted that very little work was going on locally.

On enquiring the reason, it transpired (or expired) that the whole company across the UK had ground to a halt on the computing side for at least two days, NOT due to comms problems; but due to its "cloud" facilities having failed.

It reminded me of the days when remote main-frame computing was the norm - the remote main-frame could fail, preventing normal working across all of the "remote" branches.

Today's "cloud" is very similar.

Something else to consider!

Perhaps you could rely on a Dynamic DNS name rather than and IP address.

A telephone line to another exchange may be possible if you are prepared to pay the cost. Is Virgin an option?
