A botched supplier switch... What has happened?

[link to this post]

Hi

My Father recently changed from Vodafone to NowTV opting for the standard ADSL broadband. On the day his phone line changed over to Now, he continued using the Vodafone router because I told him to carry on doing so "until his internet stopped working."

Fast forward three weeks, I went to his house to invstigate. I found him using the Vodafone router and getting a 40mb FTTC connection. When I plugged in the Now router, it did not authenticate.

In the interests of honesty, I called Now Broadband to point out the error, and I was told that my Father was indeed with Now Broadband and there was nothing to worry about.

Since he has a 40mb FTTC connection he is not really paying for, I told him to go with it until it doesn't work any more, but I'm curious as to how this has happened from a technical interest. Any Openreach engy's share an insight perhaps?

I suggest you get him to run a thinkbroadband speed test and see which ISP it says he is with. (If it says Sky that is correct as Now TV belongs to them).

How much is his bill?

What speed did he get on Vodafone before the move?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - AAISP Home::1 80/20. 200GB. Sync 01/10/18 - 71908/13506Kbps @ 600m. BQMs - IPv4 & IPv6

£18 a month with Now.

He was on Vodafone's now retired 17mb connection which was a restricted FTTC connection if I remember rightly. He has never had, or ordered, 40mb.

I will ask him to run a speed test when he's home.

Never existed to my knowledge - it was ADSL2+ that was their 17 Mbps service.

So are you saying that the 40 Mbps connection speed is totally new? What connection speed did they have before?

There was a limited promotion by openreach to upgrade slow ADSL Lines to a restricted FTTC connection

So there was, if Vodafone used it would be a big unknown and speeds should have been 18 down and 2 up if on that FTTC service
