Upgraded to fibre, now Draytek Vigor PADO packet ppp problem

[link to this post]

I have BT business broadband with a Draytek Vigor 130 modem and I have just upgraded to fibre.

I can see from the Draytek GUI that it connects happily over the new fibre broadband, and it shows that VDSL is running OK.

Linux on my PC gets the NIC a DHCP IP address from the modem too.

However I cannot get linux to bring up a PPPoE connection. It fails with the following log (copied by hand):

Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded
Started PPPoE
pppd 2.4.7 started by root, uid 0
Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery

The BT Business Smart Hub is working fine and in fact I have that plugged in now so I can connect over the wifi and do some solution hunting.

I have tried changing the username and password from my previous username. I am now using the same username/password combination given on the BT smart hub.

This is my ppp provider config:

user "[email protected]"
hide-password
plugin rp-pppoe.so enp6s0
noipdefault
defaultroute
replacedefaultroute
persist
noauth
mtu 1472

I'd appreciate any help!

Is the modem set to use vlan =101 and priority=2 ?

Can you establish a connection from a Windows 10 PC?

Well, not sure how I would tell. I have this page on the draytek gui but it's not clear what it's doing. When I enter Tag Value = 101 and OK it, it reboots the modem but then comes back with 8293 in there like this screenshot.

Draytek config screenshot

I'm going to search for some info from Draytek explaining how that works and if it saved the "VLAN tag insertion" at all, and whether I need to enter it for "Service" only, or in the "Customer" column there too.

It certainly didn't make any difference to the PPPoE attempt I just tried after entering 101 and priority 2 in those fields.

I don't have any Windows machines so I can't try that last tip.

Set the VLAN in the Service side, not the customer side.

The Draytek Vigor GUI documentation on their website just served to confuse me completely and I can see they have a console interface for the modem which I would have used to try to extract that VLAN tag info.

However the whole thing - both the GUI output and the documentation - is so ambiguous in meaning when you don't know what it all means, I just decided to start from scratch and did a factory reset on the modem first.

Happily that sorted it out and it's now up and running.

Thanks for the help.

I have nothing particularly positive for say for Draytek. In my experience they're reliable long term, the interface was written by someone who clearly love hating life, and frankly they're overpriced...
