Speed loss

[link to this post]

For a year, my average TBB download speed has been around 60mbps
that's the tbbx1 figure on the thinkbroadband speedtest

Yesterday my TBB download speed crashed to around 9mbps
and it's still around that today
and I've been getting 4 second lag spikes in online games, making them unplayable

Does anyone know what could have caused this problem?

Report it to your Telephone provider as a voice fault. Dont mention broadband.

Faults like that are a good reason for having a single supplier of both services then you can mention both problems.

So something's changed

The noise, it was actually more of a popping noise than crackling, was still there this morning

But it disappeared an hour or two ago

I'm still getting bad lag in online games, but it isn't as bad as yesterday, maybe 1 or 2 seconds lag

Should I still call it a voice fault, or is it now a broadband only fault?

And what could have caused the popping sound on my landline?

What is your speed like? What does the BT checker say about your speeds?

From the BT speed page

but that's an old date, the speedchecker hasn't updated in the last few days

That's the problem Openreach may say speed is acceptable. You can call your ISP and say you have heard noise on the line but if it is not there when Openreach visit you run the risk of a no fault found and a charge from Openreach. Who is your ISP?

Those speedtests you have linked to aren't too bad perfectly adequate for most needs including HD video streaming and general downloading. The average uk download speed is 59 mb/s. You will be hard pushed for EE to do anything unless it is below the handback speed on the BT page. The impacted figure.

Well that is very low but what was the TBBx6 speed? You should also try a few speed testers around the same time like speedtest.net and fast.com to confirm to identify what kind of speed problem there is.

but since this started, my tbbx1 speed has been a lot lower

I see what you are getting at the TBBx1 speed I just looked at the total speed at the top of the speedtest links. That smacks of congestion somewhere but you should also check it with another speedtester as mentioned above. Speedtest.net and fast.com have single thread testing options. Once you have proved it is not the speedtester providing erroneous results you can go to EE and complain about streaming quality, the gaming latency may also suggest congestion somewhere. What is your machine spec and are there any other users on the LAN?

Speedtest.net says 20 Mbps

fast.com says 57 Mbps

I'm desyncing a lot from game servers too

Sometimes it's for 5-10 seconds at a time, every few seconds

Sometimes it's a permanent desync and I have to relog

The router is staying in sync all the time, I would see its connection light flash if it disconnected from the internet

But a few times, when I desync from game servers, I have also been unable to reach websites, and voice over ip also cuts out

When that happens, it's usually only for around 10 to 15 seconds, and it's only happened a few times in the last few weeks

Is the phone crackling when you get these low speeds? Maybe someone else may come along with ideas. Other than checking your setup and maybe getting EE to send a new router to test it could be congestion which again is an EE prob.

I'm pretty sure EE won't send me a new router without charging me for it

The above article may be of help checking your own setup to rule it out before you contact EE about slow speeds.
