BTSmartHub2 - Turns off static IP on it's own

[link to this post]

Hello,

I have a BT Fibre900 install and have the BTSmartHub2 and a netblock of 5 ip addresses.

Roughly, every 36 hours it will turn the static ip feature from "on" to "off" and obviously all access to servers and equipment on those IP's is lost. When I log back into the "SmartHub2" and turn it back on, all the configuration is still there and everything works again, for about 36 hours until it turns off again.

I've tried BT support and getting the usual reset the router [censored], see if that fixes it. Has anyone used one of these and knows why it is doing it? This is a brand new service and it has done it ever since I've had the router, but with it taking 36 hours to turn back off it's a nightmare to diagnose.

This may be a daft answer, but does your order confirmation email state that you have a Static IP (and quotes it)?

To enable remote access into our village hall on our ADSL service, we had to change our BT Business account from Broadband Essential and Line to a Halo for business 1-BB + Value Line with Broadband Enhanced

This came with an email from BT which included our Static IP address and Subnet Mask.

Of course the Static IP option came at an increased cost.

Cheers!

We ordered it with 5 ips and it was confirmed on the order but the IP addresses were never listed. We contacted BT with our service ID and they gave us our IP range over the phone.

When adding this information to the SmartHub2, everything routes fine and the IP addresses work externally, but then I have the issue of the SmartHub2 turning off static ip mode after around 36 hours.

Possibly a TR069 provisioning issue?

It does appear to be a TR069 issue...

This is logged on the SmartHub2 everytime it happens:

"Hub has activated against the device management system"

So basically, it's being turned off by BT then. I'm not getting anywhere with BT business support other that reset it or "wait until it's been 10 days"... not very re-assuring on a business service that costs £80+ a month.

Any particular reason that you must use their router?

Sounds like you've tried all you can here, so maybe time to put in a complaint to the CEOs email address.

Try factory defaulting the hub first if you haven't done that, and see if it stabilises.

I'm actually doing double NAT here, because I have the BT router plugged into a Mikrotik router because I use the Mikrotik to do PCC load balancing with a virgin business connection as well.

I did try to setup PPPoE on the mikrotik directly to get rid of the BT SmartHub2, but I couldn't get the static IP's working. The PPPoE interface gets a dynamic address (like the SmartHub2 does) but when I add the static range to the mikrotik using PPPoE I can't get it to work.

OK so the SmartHub2 is really only being used as a kludge anyway, and not a particularly elegant kludge if you’re resorting to double NAT.

Better to focus on getting PPPoE and your /29 range working directly from the MikroTik. It may take a bit of work but will be the preferable long term solution.

I would break this up into baby steps to getting it working in stages:

Firstly get ‘simple’ PPPoE working and routing and your firewall correctly. Once you’re satisfied, extend the config to get the /29 deployed and working.

For info I have both a /29 and PPPoE working on MikroTik, admittedly on separate routers/sites and with separate providers. But it’s all eminently doable.

Yeah I know what you mean.

I will try and have another stab at routing the /29 through the PPPoE interface. PPPoE was connecting and I was getting access through the dynamic IP on that interface. What I think is breaking when I try to route the /29 is the PCC setup, as I have three interfaces (WAN1, WAN2 and LAN) involved in that setup (mangle rules and routes) that I think is breaking with the introduction of another interface (pppoe-out).

What's interesting is that I had a call with BT support again after my last post on here and they actually sent a new SmartHub2 router and asked me to return the other. Now I have two BTSmartHubs in my BT account and ever since the second one turned up on the account, the first one has stopped resetting the static IP configuration as if BT have stopped configuring it with TR069.

Fun and games...
