NTE5C Master Socket

I was round a friend's house last night. He moved into a dilapidated house a few months ago, and BT had been round to re activate the phone line, and install a master socket (for phone and FTTC broadband)

It's an NTE5C, I was amazed to see a filter/splitter dangling from the front of it, and it not having a faceplate with separate phone and DSL sockets on it. Is that still the 'default' install by Openreach ?

Openreach fitted this in my house back in March 2019. It has two ports, but bulky and easy to knock.

Bit odd seeing that by 2025 everybody is going to have to have a DSL interface.

That said, perhaps post 2025 the NTE5C will just have an RJ-11 socket on the front !

Will they? I don't think they will. There will be millions that do not have any form of ADSL, VDSL, SDSL ...

Not disputing that, just stating the millions will not have DSL at that time and no NTE5c (or equivalent)

We've had the same for several years, A earlier one of same type had a dodgy clip, and as it's behind a curtain the front kept falling off until I taped it on. It was replaced with a better moulded one (same model) two or three years back and it won't fall off unless the tabs are pressed. IIRC it's the same as the mk2 in Brunel's link but the lower half has the bulky 'lump' on the front. At our other house a similar socket to the mk2 in link was fitted about 4 years ago, but this was for landline only.

But by CP’s still supplying micro filters, it ensures that their customers will be able to connect the CP router to what’s in the property, or if they find an SSFP then they use that.

The VDSL front plates cost a deal more than a standard NTE.

Imagine the huge costs involved in Openreach ensuring every property has an NTE and SSFP. Not just the costs of the actual kit, but staff to organise and fit the things.

It is still very common for Joe Public to be using their router on the end of a nasty plug in extension …. they don’t want the router shifted, and why should Openreach cough up to do it gratis ?

£10 for a new one off ebay if it really bothers him. They do just clip on so easy.

I agree though it is all a bit weird. You would think there would be a form or something and BT would send you a new one? But no. How anyone is meant to get them if its all self install? Not to mention sogea, how are people expected to get their extensions out of the master socket and into the back of the router port? My neighbor was sneakily sold sogea by SKY with no warning. We worked out what had happened but there was no warning not to plug your phone line into the master socket any more? Its all a mystery.

Well, I wasn't suggesting that Openreach retrospectively fit 20 million NTE5Cs with filters, but rather from this point on when they do find themselves fitting an NTE5C at a new provision, then do it.

However, then again once the analogue circuit is switched off, you won't need a filter at all, just a BT431 to RJ-11 adaptor, or better still a BT431 to RJ-11 cable for your router, so problem solved

Won’t need a filter once there’s no longer PSTN on the circuit…a little way off.
