Attentuations

[link to this post]

Hi Just moved to another router and used to getting only 1 attenuation info but this is reporting 3,

Why is there such a big difference between the 3?

Attenuation DS1 15.4 dB, DS2 43.3 dB, DS3 68.6 dB US0 7.1 dB, US1 34.9 dB, US2 54.2 dB

Thanks

Because there are so many variables, the make of modem, and of DSLAM vendor, the software the router uses to calculate the figures, etc, etc On some long lines even external temperature can change these readings.

They are, after all, only a guideline

Assuming you're on a VDSL (FTTC) connection then you'll see multiple attenuation metrics (DS1, DS2, DS3) due to the different VDSL frequencies (or tones)

Someone can probably give you a much more detailed response but that's the simplified reason your new router is reporting multiple metrics.

Its the physics of sending what are radio signals down a long copper wire. Different freqencies respond differently.

Have a look at the image: https://d3i71xaburhd42.cloudfront.net/d35a98b1f985c0... It shows 8 & 12 MHz bandwidths, but BT uses 17MHz however priciples are the same.

That shows where US0, DS1, US1, DS2 ... lie in te spectrum. US0 being the lowest frequency where attenuations are lower, then DS1 with a slightly greater average attenuation, US1 and so on.

Your original router would just average te thre DS figures.
