Understanding my Ping Plotter results.

[link to this post]

Hey there. Based in UK. ISP is Virgin. Average DL speeds are 200mbps.I've been having issues regarding high ping and packet loss. I first noticed this while playing DayZ and getting kicked due to high ping. After using Ping Plotter, it seems I do have an issue.

I first attempted changing settings in the router and on my PC. No change.
Then I replaced my ethernet cable and coaxial cable. No change.
Pinged my router for a while. No packet loss or high ping.

I will attach a URL to my Ping Plotter results after monitoring my connection to Amazon.com.
Could someone help me interpret these results as to where the problem may be?

You will need a bit more data than just ping response to get to the root of the issue.

What router are you using?
Does it suffer from bufferbloat and related to this what is your connection utilisation?

Have you setup a BQM which will give you some pointers?

If all that is fine then it will be upstream of you.

1) Private IP - PL 2 %
2) Private IP - PL 2 %
3) Look like your Public IP - Virgin Media Business - PL 3%

5) 62.253.174.178 - Virgin Media - PL 15%
6) 99.82.178.218 - Amazon.com - PL 69%
7) 52.93.80.74 - Amazon.com - PL 56%
8) 52.93.80.191 - Amazon.com PL - 59%
14) 52.85.140.210 - Amazon CloudFront PL - 2%

DL and UL speed (Rate) have nothing to do with ping (latency/loss). A ping would have same (latency/loss) if your connection was 10 Kbps, 10 Mbps, 10 Gbps, 10 Tbps.

This tells you nothing but what a connection to amazon.com looks like for your. Your issue is with DayZ, so need to do test to there servers. Having quick look the nearest ones are in Germany at about 500km, USA servers are about 7700km.I dont play DayZ so no idea about channging them.

The first hop which should be your router is excessively high. 7.9ms minimum is higher than what you'd expect for an ethernet connection over a short distance but not terrible, the 67.4ms average is awful though.

I assume your router is the issue here and the high latency is carried forward to each subsequent hop. Why your router is taking an excessively long time to reply to pings is anyone's guess though.

I did a ping test to my router this morning.

I did a test yesterday too and the results are the same. This would suggest that things are ok inside the house am I right?

Thanks for the reply btw!

It would appear so.

192.168.0.1 should be the first hop on your other trace. Are you taking the plots from your router directly? I think that may have confused me.

If everything is okay on your router I think the issue may be as Brunel pointed out, congestion on Virgin's side. One thing I would check is to run a plot whilst maxing out your bandwidth, if the latency doesn't swing crazily whilst you're doing that then everything is likely okay on your end.

Hi in regards to my thread I think the core network issue is resolved, I am waiting a few days to confirm this is the case.

Many Thanks,

Very aware, I jinxed it. I think VM need to pinhole reset and reconfigure from scratch, might help fix the problem.
