Jurrasic fibre ping increased out of nowhere?

[link to this post]

I used to get really good 7ms ping all the time. Now it's between 18-20ms in the games and in speed test pages and ping test. What could be the cause of the problem? Technical support pretty much non existent with this isp. So nobody cares or willing to help me. I used to get 5ms on my copper internet adsl+2. So it shouldn't be like this on fibre right?.

The ping time depends on the route taken by your traffic through the internet infrastructure as light or electricity travels along the connections at speeds defined by the laws of physics. If your ping has suddenly increased, then the most likely cause is that your connection is taking a longer route to reach the endpoint than previously.

People whose ISPs use Zen as their backhaul have reported this sort of effect a number of times at various places on this forum. Zen has portals in London and Manchester areas where they receive the traffic from the ISP. The customer base is weighted towards the southern end of the country so their London portal is regularly over-loaded and they switch some of their traffic to the Manchester portal without any warning to the individual customer or concern about the possible effects on those customers. The sudden rise in your ping times is consistent with something similar happening to your connection (although that is not to rule out other causes).

Do you happen to know which backhaul Jurassic use?

One of the support team made a blog post about latency, he seems to think 30ms is great for fibre and 200ms is fine and won't be a problem.

Jurassic , read this and you'll see the issue

They have no clue what they are doing. Jurassic are pulling fibre outside my house, their sales department says no we are not, we may come to your area in the future.

I asked them some very basic questions and they simply couldn't answer.

No fixed IP, CGNAT / shared IP's, no IPV6 , packages on the websites for all of the companies swallowed by Fern change daily and customer complaints across the group are growing.

as an FYI you can request a fixed IP address.
I've had no problems with JF so far, I got them to put their router into modem mode,

Latency ranges from 10-15 MS on average, i've never seen it go as high as 20.

3 people I have seen were told "no fixed IP" , that is now the case on the other providers in this group.

Jurassic boast about their own network providing low latency , on FTTP 10-15ms is not low.

My FTTC connections runs at 8ms.

Hopefully when they sort themselves out things will improve..

Just called them and requested a static IP.
Obviously I had to justify it as I regularly remote into my home service for work reasons (I work from home).

It's a service they offer to business users. However if you can justify it, they do offer it to home users at no extra cost.

Yeah they do provide static ip and it's okay. Just concerned about my ping. Fibre normal ping should be between 3 to 5ms that's or even less. But yeah this provider is really horrible when it comes to support. They give customers some trash £15 nokia router.

You can ask them to put the nokia into bridge mode, so you can use your own router.
but you cannot replace their nokia.

Are you able to provide a trace route ?

This will show where the latency is being introduced.
