AIUI, if you are moved to digital voice from BT or Plusnet, you must use their supplied Hub to have something that a phone can connect to.
If this is the case, can this Hub be downstream of another router?

My guess, no.
(though I expect someone will correct me shortly)

BT Digital Voice is very much a walled garden setup. There was a long thread where someone looked into how the SH2 registered with the BT servers and eventually worked out how to spoof enough to interpose an third-party router, but it isn't simple - see https://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/t/4670157-re...
Plusnet don't offer Digital Voice, the general thoughts are that they are unlikely to. Anyone wanting to retain phone service in FTTP priority exchange areas and everywhere after WLR stop sell would be likely be offered a BT broadband + DV package.

Thanks for the reply and the link to that thread which I do recall. It is complex! Fortunately at the address where I might loose the analogue service I have always used a Sipgate VOIP number and almost never told any one the landline number, so loosing the service won't be a problem.
According to the BT website the mass rollout of Digital Voice is currently paused for most customers. I wonder why?

Certainly very difficult to do judging by the aforementioned thread.

According to https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2023/03/bt-upd... and https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2023/05/bt-exp... they restarted the rollout earlier in the year to a subset of customers, subsequently expanded it, and will soon be targeting more on a region-by-region basis.

Because they were getting their ducks in a row to provide solutions to vulnerable customers requiring lifeline services.

Can we use any kind of duck, or just a mallard for instance ?

Cannot use Mandarins though ... potential for CCP interference!
