VM Hub 5 Latency Spikes every Hour - 1Gb

[link to this post]

I've been a VM Customer for a long time. I've been a 1GB Customer for about 18 months now but recently my speeds were down so I investigated this and it turned out to be my third party TP Link Router. The Third party TP LInk Router was removed and I now use the Hub 5 in Router Mode and it works well, good WiFi coverage in my small house and full speed on Ethernet.

My connection is stable & strong with no disconnects or drop outs and always at full speed. That is really good but according to the TB BQM, every hour, on the hour i have a latency spike. I don't notice this there is no packet loss and it is not detrimental. Apparently the Hub5 has a built in Speed Checker which uses internal SamKnows software which monitors the speed and reports them back to VM but I would like this turning off or disabling if that is possible. It doesn't look good visually.

My Broadband Ping

I have contacted VM Tech Support many times and on the one occasion I spoke to someone who I thought knows what he is doing he denied I was having latency spikes and wouldn't accept an emailed picture proving this.

If this is how it is then so be it, but it would be better tuned off or at least an acknowledgement and explanation as to why it occurs.

Thanks for any responses.

I have HUB 5, does not show any latency spikes. I can connect to SamKnows realspeed.

I have seen similr on BT/OR services - suddenly appeared, remained for a year or so, then disappeared. Did not cause any issues I was aware of, I and BT support could not work out why.

The yellow line is 99th percentile, i.e. only 1 in 100 packets takes that long. The average latency, the blue line, is barely changed.

Most likely I'd expect there's something on your network which is doing a big transfer every hour and filling your link to capacity; some of the BQM test pings then have to queue up behind this traffic (see "bufferbloat").

If the box is doing a SamKnows speedtest every hour, that could certainly explain it. Or maybe you have some PC which is backing up to the cloud every hour.

Like you say, if it's not affecting your service, then I wouldn't worry about it. Indeed, you should be happy if regular throughput tests are being done (assuming that someone is monitoring them and will act if they show poor throughput)

I think the hub 5 includes the SamKnows "RealSpeed" software, which the Hub 3 certainly does not.

I believe there is a regular test that runs which people have reported in the past will just stop by itself one day, but also that if other network activity is detected it stops right away.
