Upstream Downstream

Hi All,

My broadband speed has dropped from 2.2mb down to .78mb.

I have looked at my router system information and find some of the figures a bit odd
Upstream Attenuation 315
Downstrean Attenuation 630

These figures seem high

Upstream maxrate 820000
Downstream max rate 2496 does this mean I should get around 2.4mb download?

Upstream current rate 448
Downstream current rate 2176

Currently on speedtest.net I'm getting .78mb download and .38mb upload.

Can any one enlighten me as to what they mean and what might be causing my slow speed. I have an extension phone line wired into my master socket that only feeds my broadband line.

I'm guessing those attenuation figures might be 31.5 / 63.0 db

It would be worth running a test at http://speedtester.bt.com/ to see if your IP Profile is low which would explain your current throughput speeds.

If your IP Profile is low and your line is now stable then this will recover in 'up to' 5 days

So does this mean that my maximum download speed is 2.176mb but it's capped at 1mb?

The IP profile of 750 kbps is the limiting feature. Your router has synced at a low rate recently and BT have decided there's no point in sending you data faster than your line supported (at the time of the low sync rate). It'll take up to 5 days to recover (provided you don't again sync at a low rate).

When you say 'synced' is this when I re-boot my router? My speed was slowing down so I re-booted my router. In the past this has some times kicked my speed back up.

Is there a way to 'sync' at a higher speed?

Hi - that's what I had guessed may have happened!

Yes, you're connection speed is 2176 but BT have capped your speed using something called an IP Profile - which everyone gets if they are using BT's 'normal' broadband even if you aren't directly using BT as your ISP.

Your IP Profile has been lowered (due to a low connection[sync]) - this will increase to 1750 in a few days (as I mentioned it can take 'up to' 5 days) if you can now maintain that connection speed/sync.

It's possible things went pear-shaped for you if you've had some storms where you are. Storms and ADSL don't play very well together! I always turn my router off if I'm around during a storm...

Unfortunately BT's systems/rules can be a bit like paying Snakes & Ladders

When restarted the router will always sync as fast as possible according to the current line conditions. Generally daylight hours will give higher syncs than night hours.

One day later and after a few phone calls to Orange my provider look what happens!

Not quite up to my previous 2.2mb download 0.78mb (haven't had that since Easter time) upload but it's a lot better.

You are now getting good speeds for BT IPStream that you are now on. However:

Are these connection speeds or speedtests? Not that it matters here, as IPStream UP Sync is always 448 Kbps and before Easter you got higher.

Therefore, I suspect that Orange have moved you from LLU to BT IPStream, as they are doing for all its users since they have contracted with BT to take over their BB.

What does http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search say about your exchange? Post its link.

Also, what are your full router stats now? You omitted Noise Margins last time.
