Poor internal wiring

After checking my test socket, I can sync at 6.5Mbps but when I connect using my office extension upstairs, I only get 1.6Mbps. This suggests internal wiring issues.

To fix this, I presume I need a telecoms engineer or something? Or what are they called? What is a typical cost to fix this?

You could end up paying £40/hour for a decent technician ... And it could take anything from 1 hour to a full day! Whereabouts are you?

There is a cheaper alternative, DIY - you can get plenty of advice from here.

I am near Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

I have a few contacts dotted around who do that sort of work (and at reasonable rate too) but no-one down there.

I've had a quick look on yell.com. One fairly local guy said he does prices about half BT's rate. But BT charge a fortune!

£20 worth of tools and a few hours of asking questions here and getting advice will sort this out for you.

If you've wired a plug you can fix this.

Other thing to do is carefully remove each phone extension from the wall, take a photo of the rear of each and post links to them here.

Are your extensions DIY kits using "flat" cable?

Finally, are you CERTAIN that evey item in the house connected to the line is filtered? Alarm? Oil or gas tank dialler? Sky box? That never-used phone in the spare bedroom?

I had a rats-nest of internal extension wiring, so ripped the lot out and just retained the Master Socket. Now use DECT phones in the house.

Why not get a Wirless Router Modem and connect the Office PC wirelessly?
