What sped should I expect - newbie question

I changed ISP in November 2010 and now get a constant 2.3 / 0.8 whereas with my previous ISP I got up to 4.5 though it fluctuated a lot.

I have managed to find the following

BT Speedtester

Download speedachieved during the test was - 1959 Kbps
 For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 1200-4000 Kbps.
 IP Profile for your line is - 2500 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 10.54:23.6:65.85 (SBE:NBE:PBE)

and from my router


noise margin upstream: 5 db
output power downstream: 0 db
attenuation upstream: 26 db
noise margin downstream: 13 db
output power upstream: 12 db
attenuation downstream: 42 db

I don't understand the figures but I would be obliged if someone could interpret them for me.

you missed a bit from the BT speedtest I think, mine says

Download speedachieved during the test was - 2269 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :7616 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps

attenuation downstream: 42 db should see you connect at ~6M or so. Is this measured in the test socket behind the master faceplate ?

I presently have the router plugged in to the main socket, I have tried it in the test socket with no change of speed shown. I have tried different filters and a different modem.

the speedtester isn't returning your sync speeds, can you get them off the router plse downstream / upstream speed.

The speedtester says

For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 1200-4000 Kbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 2500 Kbps

which is a bit odd as 4000 is obviously faster that the profile of 2500 would permit.

that's the one. This says you have a 3M link to the exchange, which has got you a 2500 profile which should speedtest at about 2300. Which is about what you got on the speedtest.

When you tried in the test socket did the above numbers stay the same, or the speedtest ? We wouldn't expect the latter to change due to time delays in the IP profile system.

noise margin downstream: 19 db
output power upstream: 12 db
attenuation downstream: 42 db

as you say, the same. Was only the router plugged into the test socket ? are you sure there's nothing connected to the line before the test socket ?

On the face of it the noise margin downstream: 19 db is 6dB higher than before and this suggests the speed is being capped and not following the extra available signal upwards.

I'll ask RobertoS to take a look as he has more experience of 21CN profile options than me.

Yuo could ask your ISP - who is the current and the old one ?
