I'm not sure what I would do in this situation. Probably just cancel my direct debit anyway, inform them of this, and hang up.
I suppose you could play the card of recording the call, making them aware of this, and advising them that if they do not acknowledge that you are cancelling within the next minute, and reminding them you are out of contract, you start to bill them £10 per second for your time because they will not willingly acknowledge the cancellation and terminate the call. The fact they remain willing to stay on the call after a minute is their acceptance to your verbal contract during the phone conversation, so I see no reason why it wouldn't hold up in a court of law. Then issue them with a bill, and if they don't pay, call a debt collection agency and/or take them to court, making sure you have all required proof.
May just be able to make a small fortune out of this!
