Jurassic Fibre Bill Increase

[link to this post]

I have been a customer of Jurassic Fibre since August 2022, when I signed up after being offered a 'Discount Applied: 50% Forever' tarif. That has been £22 per month since I registered.

Several weeks ago I received an email from them saying 'When you joined us, we were pleased to offer you a 50% discount on your monthly broadband charge. We’ve worked hard to keep this promise, but due to rising costs, we can no longer sustain this offer. As a result, we need to bring your pricing in line with our standard rates.

Your new price
Your monthly broadband cost will soon increase from £22.5 to £35, an increase of £12.5. Any other services you have with us will remain the same.

My reply includes the following :

'Can I ask Jurassic Fibre to comprehensively explain why it is now changing that contract and provide me with a clear legal basis upon which it is able to increase my tariff by approximately 50%. Can you also explain to me why you are providing me with only 1 month's notice of that increase.'

Can they do this?

I have lapses in the service I receive, where the signal drops for perhaps 30 seconds, which can interfere with my NAS , and occurs often around midnight. If they insist on increasing my tarif can I ask them to improve their service? I have ignored these until now on account of considering I had a good deal.

I would be grateful for any thoughts.

50% forever - but did they ever define what it was 50% of?

If their original tarriff was £44/month then you have the £22. Over time, that £44 could increase, so if their typical, undiscounted price is now £70 month then the 50% is still there. However, looking at their current pricing for 450Mbps it is just £35 - the same as you are being offered.

You need to find teh Ts&Cs from when you signed up.

As you're not happy with the price and the quality of service, and presumably aren't still locked into a contract, why not just move?

What where the T&C's you signed up to? You may well find a get out clause.
What I'd be interested in is how long the service has been £35, and if you are due a refund of £5 per month to cover that period.

I presume they must be able to do it, otherwise they would be very careful in doing it. There is bound to be one person who will decide that it is wrong and will take it further.

i must admit a £12.50 a month rise is a fair bit to be honest, but you have the choice to move elsewhere if it is too much.
We all like to get services as cheap as we can, but sometimes it is impossible, as the email said, due to rising costs, they can no longer sustain the offer costs have gone up a lot for them and us. They need to make money, if they don't then they go under and this is something that is affecting a lot of companies.

This is a contract that started only 2 1/2years ago, costs have gone up since then, but at a predicable amount. The more cynical might think it was a ploy to gain customers knowing full well the offer was going to be terminated after a relatively short while.

The definition of "lifetime" is interesting:
“That also applies to those customers who were on the “50%” discount but are now out of contract. We maintained that discount for the life of the contract, in line with the terms and conditions, and in many cases beyond,”
I haven't seen the original Ts&Cs but would be interesting if they actually defined "lifetime" as the contract lifetime rather than anything else. I am always amazed companies get away with that sort of loose use of the english language.

Like when they say "lifetime guarantee" - what they mean usually is the lifetime of the product and they can generally choose when they "end" that life.

Mendacious is the word I would use. Although it is slightly more obvious what they have done than if they raised the price to £90 and then gave everyone a 50% discount.

My take on this is its kind of expected, they a new player, so used under priced packages to lure people in, if there is another option for similar price point, maybe jump ship? As a price rise is one thing, but 50% is a bit bold, and are they a premium ISP to back up that kind of boldness? If I look up their transit info, I expect probably not. Are they even at a non shared IP address level?
