Is Cable Network Stagnant?

I'm hoping to move house later this year but, according to the BT availability checker, their ADSL (and Max) is pretty useless in the new location due to the distance to the exchange.

The bad news is that, when the area was cabled, it stopped short by about three streets.

Assuming I'm correct in thinking that using an LLU supplier would be a waste of time, does anyone know if there are any plans to extend the cable network or is this pretty well the definitive answer?

unlikely to happen any time soon. VM only have �6Billion of debt to worry about right now

You could always ring up and ask them. Probably the best way to find out. Saying that however, when they first installed cable near us they stopped 4 houses away!! They then, several years later extended it and happily surfing away now!

Is that a "real" debt, though, or one of those asset-stripping-tax-avoidance dodges that was highlighted on the BBC recently?

They were looking for �5K to put a cable into our office which is only 20~30M away from a cable box.

its not that they dont have the money (well partly), its more that it now costs an absolute arm and a leg to dig up the pavements compared to what it used to when cables were first laid in the UK, shame really coz I live only 40meters away from my nearest cabled street, but unfortunatly I have tried everything to get them to extend the cabling but its no go

Yes, I agree, it is a shame.

I really can't see the point in using VM in a non-cable area when their own advertising can only claim: Free TV (already got it thanks) and fast, reliable broadband (er, no, that's why I was hoping to move away from BT).

It's good to see that thinkbroadband has the foresight to list VM Cable and VM ADSL as separate entities because I get the feeling that VM itself are more than happy to take all the advantages cable offers whilst simply farming off the "hard bits" onto BT, not put any investment in themselves and conveniently blur the distinction between the two. It seems to completely fly in the face of the regulator's original intention of providing a viable alternative to BT.
