Virgin Modem - Wireless

[link to this post]

Hi,
I am helping someone who has just got Virgin cable broadband setup their wireless at home. The line was setup by Virgin and plugs in by CAT5 straight through to the pc. They want wireless and have a linksys router but I am not sure how it can be setup.
The virgin modem is model number E08C007 which is CAT5 direct to the pc network card.
The pc is getting dhcp but it seems to have a public IP address as its 86.2.x.x
The wireless router is a linksys WAP54G so I was hoping someone could tell me what I would need to setup on the linksys to get this to work correctly.
Any information\advice is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Matt

The WAP54G is not a router, but a wireless access point.

If they have a single computer and don't mind the PC getting the public IP then the WAP54G will be OK.

But if you really want a router, take that kit back and get something like a WRT54G

Thanks for the respone, there will only be two computers going onto the wireless so I don't need anything complex.
Will the WAP54G just work when its plugged into the Virgin modem or does it need to be setup somehow specific?
Thanks

The WAP54G will only support one computer connected at a time, so not suitable for you.

You need a router like the WRT54G to share the public IP address between two or more computers.

The WAP54G should be working now if you've only got one computer connected. The WAP54G is really just a device that converts Ethernet into a wireless signal at the simplest level. One hopes you have enabled wireless security otherwise anyone can get your full IP address and do whatever they like with your connection.
