Customer who are already on XL can get it free but pay 7.50 for the P&P.

Custom Firmware, limited to 10 wireless connections (up from the previous 3) and with 4 hard-wired ports.

It's a Netgear WGR614 (v6).

Remains the property of Virgin Media, so they'll ask for it back when you leave, so if you upgrade your router at a later date, don't throw this one away, otherwise you'll be charged 40.

I was on the wireless trial, so got this free last year. It is the same one that is being offered here (though we get to keep the router and wireless card / dongle :-) ). This is what the trial was for - this roll out of the free router.

This appears to be an 802.11g wireless base station with Ethernet Hub.

Watch the device does not slow things down if on the XL package.

Yeah, it was meant to have had a recent firmware flash to handle 20Mbit, I know many routers struggle on 20Mbit.

Yeah. Though these were the routers xTelewest were giving away, with the firmware update available to those too, if those who are now on 20Mbit, I'd have thought we'd have heard complaints if they weren't now up to the job. However that said, do these people know it could be the router and they haven't called up VM to complain and not been told by VM to test without router and to upgrade firmware if it does play up.

I only have 4Mbit so not a problem for me at the moment, most friends and family have either 2Mbit or 4/10Mbit, so don't personally know if there are issues. The few friends and relatives that have 20Mbit broadband don't have this router and I haven't asked if they have issues with their routers as I rarely see them at the moment due to all being on strange working hours.

I'm waiting for my router to turn up and to be able to activate my broadband, I'll report speeds with it ASAP.

Isn't your broadband activated already?

You'll need to keep your cable modem, the cable modem plugs into the WAN socket on the router, you then have 4 hard-wired ports and can connect 10 other devices wirelessly.
