Re: Has Virgin introduced Phorm?

Not sure what you mean.

Phorm will create the profile based on all your web browsing, which is then used to serve up adverts on OIX partner sites.

Phorm does not serve up any advert content on a website that is not part of the OIX, and unlike previous incarnations it is not injecting any javascript for tracking purposes.

The what is and what is not legal is for much higher paygrade people to debate

Interesting read but not the case for me the othe day.

I don't use any p2p and wouldn't be so foolish as to install something becasue it said i can only play with the downloaded file. It only affected me when i was on sky news the other day and it hasn't happened since say maybe something being served up by skynews site.

I tried firefox a few years back a long with a bunch of other browsers but all the hype about them i just couldn't see or feel any advantages of them over IE.

IE is a good browser and if you want tighter security you can go in to it and set it up so. All ways worked for me.

Phorm will pimp on the traffic from websites which are NOT part of the OIX - even if the website has placed an explicit notice on their site banning it. To legally intercept traffic you have to have the informed consent of both parties to the communication - in this case it is the consent of the website owner and the visitor. Phorm are (reluctantly) giving the visitor the choice to opt in. They are not giving a choice to the website owner (except by blackmail as they would have to opt out of being indexed by Google ). That is why it is illegal.

In reply to:

Also as an owner of a website you visit, why should Phorm be able to look at the information I am providing to you? Are they going to pay me for providing them with information about your interests?

Website owners should be able to disable phorm by an entry in the robots.txt file. phorm have given assurances that robots.txt entries will be honoured.

Don't believe the Phorm spin!

Phorm have consistently refused to provide a unique agent string. Instead they look for the Google agent string - if Google is allowed then Phorm marches in. I want my site indexed by Google but I do not want Phorm - I have a choice of two undesirable options - disable Google or let form in.

I call that blackmail!

I had assumed a phorm user agent identifier. If there isn't one then, as you say, the assurance of honouring robots.txt is meaningless.

Or perhaps not.
It looks to me as though you've just 'discovered' one of the problems people have with IE and why some of the hype about Firefox is justified!

Recommend you do a bit of research on ActiveX-launched popups.

Jim has been experiencing considerable problems with his connection for the last few months.
He'll be back, I'm sure!
