very erratic speeds

[link to this post]

Anyone on the Renfrew UBR ?

Since being upgraded to 10 Meg I have consistently had speeds [ according the the tbb test ] of 9.1Meg

Unitil -the end of Nov.

Since then I have had 9.1 only once - the rest of the time it can be anything from 7 Meg down to 1Meg [ tonight ] If I use the port 80 option it will show higher but still not what I should be getting .

I can't see anything on the Service Status page that should affect it .

I'm getting just a tad fed up with this.

Anyone else seeing this ?

We don't do any hefty downloards or p2p stuff . Time of day doesn't have any effect .

Tonight as we head to bed I'll switch off the Router and see what the morning brings.

[edit] 20 mins after that one giving me 1 Meg on port 8095 and then 3.xx on port 80 I have just got 6.1 on port 8095 !!! [/edit]

You can access the Newsgroups VirginMedia Support Broadband Cable and ask the resident techie to take a look at your situation remotely. Before 10:00 pm these guys come back to you within a few minutes and tell you if the issue is the load on your UBR or if it is likely caused by your modem voltages etc. Very helpful folks. The problem is the fixes for the Ticket Items (Numbers) they raise rarely materialize. The front line at least is doing its job. At minimum, you will find out what the issue is. There are an increasing number of issues. if you need, there seems to be remedies () available if things are not fixed.

Best regards and trust all is well.

I get the feeling I have found the answer - a dying Router

Rebooted last night - and instantly back on 9Meg.

Come to think of it there have been a few momentary drop outs recently - none lasting more than a second or two - but if I hit 'get mail' I'm back on again [ the wee icon indicating no connection vanishes ]

Last time I had a dying Router I was bumped off everynight about 10pm for up to an hour no matter what I did - new Router and no more problems.

I'll keep an eye on things - and probably get a new Router fairly soon . I can't get on with Ethernet easily - would have to change where the lappy is - and anyway if the Router is going down there's only 1 connection on the CM and that is my husband's

The Wireless Router that you use was highly regarded when it was introduced in 2004 even if it looks like a Martian.

You seem to have a lot connected to it. When using Ethernet it sometimes just takes one slow connection to slow an entire 10/100 network down to 10 Mbs. If this happens it is likely to result in a slower than required connection (now you are upgraded to 10 mbs) to your Cable Modem so perhaps the answer is to restart the device and even the computers (if turned on) periodically. A new router might behave the same way. If any of your computers have only 10 Mbs Ethernet cards or built in, try to connect up less.

Perhaps a more knowledgeable forum member can confirm or offer alternative advice?

Take care

Well I'm sitting in the Apple Store at present - speed - a mere 23.5 Meg

Normally only 2 machines are connected at home - the MacBook and the Desktop PC . From time to time the PC Lappy is on as well. So normally it's one by Ethernet and one by Wireless .
We have honestly only had trouble since the end of Nov - so I suspect that the problem really lies in the Router . Will look for a replacement after the New Year so it's in and ready

Interesting - I've done nothing at all except keep an eye on things - I'm now back to 9.1 or 9.2 Meg most of the time .

Occasionally at what could be very busy times I drop to about 7Meg [ it's School holiday times so kids are online ]

It must have been down to Virgin - though there has never been any signs of things on their Site

Looks like Virgin Media has given you a Christmas present.

I bought a new 802.11n router once thinking that was the problem - it was not and neither was it my settings.

Happy Holidays to you and yours.
