50 MB too expensive??

[link to this post]

So the cost of the new 50MBps connection will be 51.

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/50Mb/index.do

Does anyone think it is worth it?

I was looking forward to the new speed but no way I am spending that (I thought 37 was alot for my 20mb connection).

Would anyone be prepared to pay this - it seems too much to me for the extra speed - after all 20MB is pretty fast.

I guess I'll just stick with 20MB.

Yeap - take a phone line and its 5 a month cheaper.

50Mbps is around 20GB per hour if able to run flat out, and as its new network which is larger then there is a chance of better throughputs, though at 50Mbps you may find the server providing the data is more of an issue, which was something they highlighted with the speedtest stuff.

i.e. if offering HD content then you really should have multiple Gbps connections to do that these days.

Even worse - I thought these was going to be a service without traffic management.

|However, a friend just phoned them and this is not the case.
Traffic Management will be introduced after a short while they just haven't decided what the Caps will be yet.

I looked it up and saw the following:

Virgin Media's spokesperson told ZDNet UK that the 50Mbps service would launch "without traffic management", but such management would be introduced "at some point in 2009" when Virgin takes stock of "how customers are actually using the 50Mbps service".

In reply to:

I do fine on the service and stick within the limits and I am a heavy user.

I thought you went over the limit? As your post HERE shows?

Andrew

You posted

"Yeap - take a phone line and its 5 a month cheaper."

I pay 37 per month for my XL broadband, 11 per month for telephone line rental and 15 per month for Talk Anytime. My total bill is about 100 per month with no movies or special events.

It seems that the 35 per month + 11 Phone line rental applies only to new customers or customers who do not currently use Broadband or have a Telephone. Either one existing in use and from what I am told, the fee is 51 per month for XXL Broadband. To continue using 20 mbs XL, the fee continues to be 37 per month. The only other option for long term customers is cancelation.

Boy, I just love marketing schemes that buy incremental business and manipulate the best paying customers to make up the margin.
