Speed plummeting (50 mbits)

[link to this post]

Last night after 11:20 at night I was downloading at 50 mbits then suddenly the speed dropped drastically to 20 Mbits, a speedtest today shows it about 17 mbits

I understand the speed can vary but this seems like a hell of a change, unlikely to be just one of those variations.

Any one else on 50 mbits had this ?

Have you checked the modem config to see whether it is connecting at 50Meg still?

I've no idea how I would do that.

I know how to log in to my router but apart from switch on/plug in I know nothing about the cable modem.

Run a speedtest, if your upload is over 768k you're still on 50M.

You're not alone there have been a number of performance issues with the 50M product.

Ah right, yes my upload speed is good, in excess of 1 Mb

Hopefully VM will pull their fingers out and look at these issues although there are no problems shown on their status page about this.

Hi

I am not personally a subscriber of Virgin Media's broadband service, but I was at one point.

Your statement of the upload speed isn't entirely true, as I am currently using O2s 8MB service, and my constant upload speed is 1.1MB/s

Best thing to do is to contact your ISP and find out if they are doing maintenance on the network before jumping to complain about the service.

I do know that Virgin Media are in fact performing maintenance in the North West, as a friend of mine contacted them about not being able to connect for the entire of last night. He's lives in Atherton

Hi,

We're talking about Virgin Media cable, what you get on O2's 8Mbit product isn't really an issue. The next highest VM product after 50Mbit is the 20Mbit which has a 768k upload so if upload is higher than that the config file being sent to the modem is the 50Mbit one.

Very aware that DSL has higher upload having been a Be Pro subscriber and prior to that testing ADSL2+ Annex M on the Easynet network, moving to VM cable 6 months ago was the first time I'd been below 2+Mbit upstream in over 2 years wink

Maintenance should not be performance affecting during the day, any service affecting maintenance bar emergency maintenance will be announced accordingly through the usual channels of website and newsgroups. Service affecting maintenance is usually only carried out during off-peak hours. I have had the pleasure of working for ntl in the past and VM follow similar procedures for maintenance windows.

There have been a number of issues of below par downstream speeds on the 50Mbit product relating mostly to some access network issues.

Cheers.

I would steer clear away from 50Mb for at least a year later (2010) until virgin media sort this out as it was the teething problem with their new network.

No point of paying £50 a month if the speed isn't on 50Mb every days. I rather wait until everyones is happy and no speed problem and the most important is to wait until the complete roll out and see what happen ? Also for STM as well (it expecting virgin media to bring STM for 50Mb once the roll out is complete).

Best wait until next year, it worth it at the end. But, not worth it at present now.
