Anyone have multiple IP addresses with Virgin?

Just looking at the services now, seems the only way is through the 10MB Business Broadband service which is £40p/m including line rental, it mentions additional IPs may be purchased but not the costs - I've been onto Virgin support for over 30 minutes (non free phone!) and had no joy yet, they just keep passing me from department to department as no one has a clue.

So does anyone know for sure the actual pricing on this please? Or maybe any decent alternatives?

why would you want to purchase additional IPs? The way i see it is that you have more than one public ip address you are going to need more than one cable modem and more than one connection from the cabinet in the street.
Wouldnt a more cost-effective solution to this involve the purchase of a router. Then you can have your single public ip address to the router and then all of your client machines assigned with private ip addresses in the 192.168.x.x range


Actually, thinking about it, i imagine they would charge the same for each ip address the ygive you, so 1=£40 and 2=£80 ...

If you want an answer from vm by someone with a bit of knowledge i would suggest contacting them through one of their newsgroups. They usually reply quite quickly

Virgin (Telewest) used to offer 2 ips a while back on the residential service, cant see any mention of it anywhere though now.

The cable modem just used to retrieve a different config file.

Was targeted at users with consoles and pc

The way you see it isn't accurate. The only thing that limits the IP addresses per modem is a setting within their config file, specifically the 'Max-CPE' parameter. Business customers can pay extra for a block of 5 semi-static IP addresses on the 10Mb business service.

Ahh, thanks Ignition! Do you know the actual costs involved in a block of 5? 5 is actually the perfect number for me too. Any less wouldn't be quite enough, and any more could be waste (although 6 would have been nice, just in case!)

I'm actually with Entanet at the moment and pay just £19 per month for 8mb ADSL with 16 IP addresses - but I'm not sure they offer the service any more, and frankly their download limits (30GB on week days) puts me right off too.

(edit) with regards to the router, I currently have it setup really badly with my Netgear DG something or other router whereby every thing on my network needs it's own public IP address, but I hope to amend that when I move house in a week or so and get a nice Draytek thingy

Indeed they did. It was around £5 a month for the extra IP. You also got sent a little hub and massive cat 5 cable.

The modem would allow two MAC addresses at the same time, giving each one a unique IP. As far as I know, it is still on the system as XBOX Gaming Package.

I'd say that's going to be the only way to really do it.

You could look at something like Broadbond or Sharedband. Although bonding solutions, can offer you multiple IPs over cable. Not sure what it would be like for gaming though.
