VM Supply of Routers.

[link to this post]

Has anyone noticed that VM are now using two types of Router?

Some on the VM Forums and a friend of mine has recieved a DLink - 615 D4.

I recieved a replacement router and it was a Netgear WNR2000V2 on may 6th.

I wonder if VM got stocks of Netgear back in because in a lot of areas they have been complaining that there were no routers available and on back order for customers, so phaps Dlink were not supplying as many as they should.

I have to say that the Netgear will knock spots off the Dlinks.

I didn't get the promised router with my install which is a real PITA as I've run a home network since I was on dialup. I wasn't impressed with the performance either - pings all over the place and very variable speeds - typically ~ 9Mbps on a 20Mbps package. I know the speeds are not the PC as it gets close to 20Mbps at silly o'clock.

Anyway because I was trebelly miffed when I found caller id was chargeable I called to cancel and was magically offered a router shipped by courier for Monday along with what I consider to be complete BS about the Icelandic volcano being to blame for their low stocks of routers. I'm afraid I upset the rep by taking the mickey at that story.

My betting is that they are behind with their payments to the supplier and have swapped - I'll see what I get. As there was massive cashback with the deal I'll probably stick out the poor performance for the year and bin it after that.

Suppliers give credit usually so swapping to a new supplier opens a new line of credit. In any event I'm glad my credit card bill isn't as big as theirs.

Virgin Media has won approval from its banks to postpone repayments on its £4.3 billion debt burden until 2012.

Or maybe it was supply problems but I certainly don't believe that the week of flight problems caused by the Icelandic volcano is the reason.

How did you run a network with dialup? Wired, presumably!

given VM's recent morals I think you may not be far wrong.

Seems they only able to post their weak profits by avoiding growing capacity alongside orders and deffering debt's.

I had a Linksys WRT54G which had wireless. I don't think I bothered to share the internet connection - I mostly had the network so I could access my data from computers that were upstairs in my home office and downstairs giving me a choice of where to work from. My exchange wasn't enabled until ages after the big city ones were.

What router you get simply boils down to what numbers are available at that particular point. There have been some shortages down to delivery logistics during the whole ash fiasco but generally it can depend purely on whatever is in stock at that point in time. For the record they continue to simultaneously supply BOTH Netgear and DLink routers to customers.
