Cable in Skelmersdale?

[link to this post]

Hi to you all
Does anyone know if Virgin Cable are coming to Skelmersdale in Lancashire. Currently a lot of green pipework is being done in a lot of areas of Skelmersdale. This includes digging up channels to take the pipework across many of our local roads.
I understand that Virgin use green pipework for their cable network. I can't find anything on Google about expansion plans so am asking if anyone local to me has any information please.
Thanks
Laurie

Hi Laurie,
I currently live in Skelmersdale and have also been interested in the installations going on in and around the town. I work with an ex BT engineer and he confirmed that Green pipelines are telecommunications.

I can also confirm that when they were installing around Marie Cancer Island that I spotted a notice saying Virgin Media Maintenance. So is good news. I've wanted cable for ages. I called Virgin Media to ask when it would be available but they could not provide any information other than sending leaflets out when everything complete.

Hope this helps

Hi Mike
Many thanks for the info. Good news indeed as because I live at the furthest edge of the Skem Telephone Exchange I only get just over 2mb broadband. I suppose it will some tie before everything gets installed. Roll on.
Cheers
Laurie

Hi Drea
I just had a look at one of the newly constructed manhole covers near ASDA in Skem and the cover is labeled 'CATV'. Having done a search through google I have found references to CATV being connected with Virgin Media.
I would appreciate your comments please.

Hi Seansmit17
Just a quick one for you to say that Skem is not a village but is classified as a 'New Town' and has had that classification since 1961. The current population is about 38000. Don't take this little note the wrong way. I just find it rather funny that anyone can call Skem a village.

I guess it depends where they lived before smile

I was under the impression that VM had so much debt that fully new cabling anywhere wouldn't be likely for some time. That said they seem to have upgraded old analogue areas to digital and are rolling out higher speed products regularly - I'm betting that work doesn't cost anywhere near the price of laying new ducting though.

I just looked at Skelmersdale on Google maps - you don't find many villages several km across and sporting loads of roundabouts smile

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

Hi DREA, can you provide your source of information?

I can 100% confirm that the maintenance sign was Virgin Media! Plus, the pipes are not exclusive to the town centre; theyve been laying them to residential areas near Digmoor which is the other side of the BT Exchange Centre? Why bother going to these areas?

As a business, if you going to the expense of laying these pipes, why not make some money by providing the town with 50Mb + broadband/TV laying optical fibre? If your correct then what Ive seen does not make sense!

Just got off the phone to West lancs Council and a very nice woman (who lives in Skem) also confirms that she believes it to be Virgin media from the information she has; (plus, she has also seen a different Virgin media sign in old skem). She told me that United Utilities know more on the current works and offered me the contact number, but I declined, as Im now confident.
