Best Router for 50 MB Virgin Media Cable connection

[link to this post]

I have just signed up for the 50 MB Virgin Media connection and I would like to know what router best works with this connection? I have read that the Netgear wireless N supplied by Virgin is not good.

My PC has a Gigabyte Network card and I was honestly thinking of buying a gigabyte switch and then connect my desktop, Xbox and VOIP phone directly to the Gigabyte switch and as for the laptops, let them connect to through the Netgear router. This seems the cheapest and easiest way and I will be spending less than £30 to do this.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Finally, I have not received my router and customer services keep giving me the run around and I was thinking of emailing the CEO for Virgin Media. Any thoughts?

Regards,
Jizzy

edit:..i had to look for this no there as i very seldom have to call them . wink

this will only be possible if you have received your vm acc no ,as it is only for existing 50mb customers

i agree the Netgear WNR2000V2 Virgin supplied me is brilliant much better than the first router they supplied which was a Dlink DIR615 D2 which kept dropping Wireless connections or wouldnt issue IP addresses to wireless devices.

A friend of mine has just ordered a WNR2000 from Ebuyer after he could see how happy i was with mine.

Athlon 64 6000+ AM2 X2, ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe 570 NForce Mainboard, 4GB DDR 2 XMS2 800Mhz Cosair Ram, 3856.46GB Hard Disk Space, 1GB ATI 4670 HD PCI-E 16x Graphics, 700watt PSU.

the WNR2000 is rubbish. you can't turn off sip alg in the gui so sip-based voip is basically a non-starter. every other netgear model has the option to turn it off - just not that one. not even from the cli. utter garbage. now, my WNDR3700 is a much nicer router... much more expensive though.

SIP worked for me with both my mobile with a SIP client via WIFI and my Cisco ATA186.

Generally the router was OK, but there are better ones by all accounts.
I'm using mine as an 802.11N access point only now.

I found the only way to get mine to work was to downgrade the firmware to a really old version where sip-alg must have been disabled by default. perhaps some ata's are more compatible than others but i tried a spa3102 and a gigaset S685IP and had the same problem.

If you don't like the Netgear firmware you can flash it with DD-WRT

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.
