Hi,
I am a Newbie. I recieve the Virgin 20meg, which I actually do get nearly 20,so i can't really complain. When The guy installed my modem he told me it was capable of handling around 30Meg but was restricted by Virgin tech at there end when they configured my set up.
My question is do you know how to tap into my modem, so as to upgrade it's capabilties.
(Obviously without Virgin knowing)
Thanks

VM will be offering a free 20Mbps to 30Mbps upgrade in February but you have to make a one-off payment for a Superhub.
If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

Hi,
Thanks. Do mean a superhub is like those that handle the 50meg service.
Superhub is the new combined modem and router.

thanks pete. I am going to call Virgin tomorrow and see whether it is the case that they are upgrading and how much it will cost me?
It isn't officially announced yet. Wait til it is or you'll just waste your time and theirs.

too late. I just spoke to Virgin and she checked my details and told me that I am eligable for the update as and when the team get around to it in my area. Also I will not need a new modem.
Good news and no fiddling required. I am glad you told me that Virgin are planning an upgrade so I will not have to waste time looking for any fiddles.
Cheers

She probably misunderstood and thought you were asking about the upstream upgrade. Once the 30Mbps upgrade is announced you will just be able to order it. I think the Superhub is needed because they intend to deliver it using Docsis 3 and the modem you have won't support that.
Keep your eyes peeled.

No I don't think she was misunderstood because I asked her to check my modem details and she said yes I would not need a new modem. Also the upstream upgrade happened last year. As i said at the start of my thread... the engineer who installed this modem told me it was capable of at least 30meg and of course i asked him if can DIY a speed up but he said it was all controlled at virgins end. They send a signal code that tell sthe modem the speed.
Also this wasn't a foreign call centre person as I always make sue I get through to Customer Retention in The North East who are better trained and quite intelligent..

Well it isn't officially announced yet but the page they accidentally published definitely said you had to pay £30 for a Superhub to get the upgrade.
Docsis 1 can support 38Mbps so they could do it that way but my interpretation was that they were requiring the Superhub because it would be provided on Docsis3 which I don't think the current non-50Mbps modems can support.
Time will tell.
Here is the leaked page in the google cache (it has been pulled from the site).

Yes will we have to wait and see? I am afraid I do not understand what Docsis 1 or 3 are?
They are just different cable standards. Docsis 3 is the newer one and supports channel bonding (3 or 4 channels get used for the 50Mbps product) I'm not sure if they'd use bonding for 30Mbps or not.

OK. We will have to wait and see. Thanks for your info throughout this thread..

I have the old modem (installed 2007) and a Belkin N router. Will that setup work for the 30Mb upgrade? If not, will the Superhub they supply for 30Mb also be good for the 100Mb service? I've signed up for the 100Mb trial when and if it gets to SE London. I'm happy with my 20Mb at the moment but 30Mb for free sounds good in the interim. Can I install the Superhub myself? Hate waiting in for their engineers.
I thought the 100Mb trials were over now that it's available as a product.
Well, they are supposed to contact me when it becomes available here. I was going to get 50Mb until they suddenly announced 100.
If I don't hear soon, I'll go for 50 and upgrade later.
Have a look on their rollout schedule:

Should give you a date unless you've got the vague "in planning" which is what I have for both my upload increase and 100Mb :-/

Pete is correct about the new superhub. I have just received a letter inviting me to upgrade to the 30meg service from the 20 for £30 one off fee. I have taken them up on the offer as the new service will be £1.50 per month cheaper so it should pay for itself after a while.
The new self install superhub comes in 2 days So hopefullt It will go smoothly.
I was told that S/Hub is the same as 50meg hub but that service needs an engineer to install (at £60) why do you think that is?
50Mb service is served over DOCSIS3 and is less tolerant of incorrect signal level??
My guess anyways
Thankyou Pete.
Pete being as you seem to know such things, How do I turn off the facility in Google Chrome that records my web searches and then forever keeps poping up sales suggestions. For instance I looked at a bed on John Lewis and now Google Chrome keeps popping up bed sales sites?

Search for ad blocker - even if you can't find one I'm sure you'll get a few ads for them.

My super hub arrived and now installed and working. Speedtest said 31.3 meg and broadband speedchecker said 23, so there you are. It's faster that's all I care about.
