Are Virgin now capping the speed of all SSL news connections

[link to this post]

Just gone to use my news client and it is stuck at a steady 1.5 MB/s.

I have been using an alternative SSL port since Virgin started capping the default port a while ago and always get a solid 6.00MB/s

Not had any speed problems with Virgin since the couple of years I have been using them. Not seen any new installs near me lately so not sure if it is congestion but as it is steady at 1.5MB/s no matter what SSL port I use suggests Virgin have started to cap these ports also.

Anybody else able to reach their maximum speed on alternative SSL ports?

Just confirmed Virign are definately capping speed on the usenet ports.

I'm getting my 50MB on all speedtests at speedtest.net, bbmax and thinkbroadband speedtests.

When downloading throught my news reader I am restricted to 1.5MB.

I have tested this using my usenet server accounts and astraweb accounts, getting the same speed on both.

Tested using ports 563, 443 and 8080.

Even slower when using the none SSL ports.

Full steam ahead on giganews here port 563 smile

An odd oversight that, on Virgin Medias part. Considering that all other Usenet related ports are throttled to hell, it seems odd that they've left that one out. Saying that it doesn't seem to be a workaround for everyone. It certainly works for me at the moment, but the day 563 stops providing a workaround to this nonsense, I shall be upping sticks.

Yes, I've noticed this as well. I'm not 100% sure but I think there is now a cap on the amount of port 443 SSL data you can transfer before the restrictions kick in. It doesn't happen immediately though.

Could always, you know, buy the stuff or wait for it to come to UK TV instead of paying for VPN and news service.

Scary prospect I know.
