39Mb on 100Mb connection in Belfast

Have Virgin accidentally halved speeds in Belfast rather than double them ? Have been getting nowhere near 50Mb in recent days on this 100Mb connection - directly wired to modem. new modem on the way but something tells me that's not the issue here. Doesn't matter what time of the day or night I test - 20-30Mb is the result.

Hardly anything to complain about, some have to make due with less than 3mbps...

That's not the point. I'm paying for 100 and barely get 50

Stats look ok - either it's something odd your end or it (more likely) congestion at the UBR.

Thanks for looking. New modem fitted but no difference. Have ran stats from both iMac and Windows 7, same result

ignoring speed tests sites have you tried downloading from 2-3 sites at once that can do full speed or/and tbbmeter and do an 200MB or 500MB test see if that max your connection out

make sure nothing is uploading when doing the tests as well as that will lower your download speed alot if your uploading more then 1-2mb in some cases

(should also do an ping test as well make sure your not dropping packets)
command box (cmd)> ping google.co.uk -n 1000 < or bbc.co.uk, press CTRL+c to stop or x when you want to
see if your getting timed out packets a lot of them will kill the speed and make internet browsing not very stable or gaming/VOIP

Thanks for the pointer to tbbmeter, that's a new one on me. I'm seeing about 70Mb, I guess that's as good as it gets on 100Mb now

you should allso check your ping as well make sure there is not much packet loss as that can have an big affect on speed (should be less then 1% or none at all)

make sure respond to ping is set on your router, on the Virgin Mini Hub and the no so Supers Hubs its norm under DMZ option just tick the box and press apply or the above links will get constant packet loss (do not put an number in the DMZ box leave it as 0)

make sure you turn off the Firewall Features and Port Scan/ Flood detection (under services ) as that can really slow the speed down on the Virgin hubs or crash them under load
