100mbit and Speedtests

[link to this post]

Got upgraded to 100mbit today however the service has been a slow especially browsing. Contacted Virgin who connected to my PC remotely and tested the speed using their internal speedtest site. Their internal speedtest showed 102mbit download and about 4.72mbit upload.

Using any other speedtest site such as Speedtest and Thinkbroadband then I get a completely different value... between 19mbit - 35mbit. Which is right?

They all can be right,as the other testers will require Virgin Media to have good links out onto the internet too.

Tried downloading some files from machines inside the VM network, to check the figures from their tester?

I find the namesco and speedtest.net Maidstone Custodian Data Centre give good results.

Max i've ever got from this site was 97.2mbps which is the highest it's ever gone for me - still brill smile

Thanks I downloaded the x86 server iso from the Ubuntu page and got about 11.2mb per second download speed... It really was quite quick....

Tried the namesco one and I got 99383kbps....which is fantastic! I'm impressed. Could the earlier results be the result of traffic management from Virgin?

More likely to be congestion in your area. The limits on 100mb are 20GB from 10am-3pm and then 10Gb from 4-9pm Upload is 12GB from 3-8PM I believe.

But now the STM is in place if you do hit them you get 50mbps and for me it had sorted it all out.

Congestion on a UBR would also affect stuff on the virgin internal network.

There are some distinct advantages I find with cable.

You can max the upload and still watch a HD stream. ADSL can't do that. (or i've never been able to)

If you tested just before your post time - Thu 26-Apr-12 22:50:17 perhaps your local torrent freak had shut down his client?

The thing about congestion is that it varies. Sometimes over very short timescales.

I am sure they will come thick and fast. Although I'd like VM to also try to increase the upload in this network upgrade. After all with BT and sky doing 20mbps up now they should be thinking about it..Other ISP's that can are on 20% ratio now.

Upload has never been a strong point of the DOCSIS architecture

I know your right. I can only hope that in the next few years BT do our exchange as we have a cab very near to the house which should I hope get us a good speed. It's not in our garden but it's the other side of the fence! smile

probably peering/routing issues been highlighted by the slow speedtest.net

I am also curious tho if the internal VM speedtest gets any favourable treatment on the UBR.

So far every single test I have done on it has been full speed and I will keep doing more tests from now on it whenever I see slow downloads.

A excellect test. I don't see much in the way of slowdowns these days apart from STM. Mind you if DOCSIS3 can't deliver the 10Mbps I downgraded to then things really are bad.

well I have only tested on it since I got new DS channels added so generally my performance was already improved anyway, but I have since seen a couple of small slowdowns which werent present on the VM internal speedtester.
