As TPB only lists the trackers you don't need to go to the expense of a VPN to get the info - you can either just seek it on some other site (google for what you want) or a simple proxy will probably allow you to access TPB itself unless you pick one that is also blocked.
For me torrents are a PITA because some local idiot feels it is essential that he seeds flat out 24x7 and just one person doing this is enough to completely screw up a few streets on the miserably poor VM network.
