Does VM have any kind of Usenet or News server?

[link to this post]

I would NEVER have voluntarily got Virgin Media but I am stuck in a building where this is the only permitted option. First discovery, Pirate Bay is censored.

This inspired me to finally check out Newsgroups/Usenet as a source of downloads so was womdering; is there a Usenet server? It's not in the "for dummies" startup material, googling it brings me to some sites from a few years back saying that VM has a great news server?

Does anyone have info or some fresh links?

Pirate Bay is censored.

I think most major ISPs were forced into this some time back. The circumvention if you must use the site is simple enough and can be found with a quick search.

Both NNTP and torrents are subject to traffic management during part of the day on VM and that is documented in their traffic management pages

Thanks for the tips I received via PM smile

As for who is blocking TPB: It's actually only the BIG ISPs, not all of them. Which is kind of creepy. Particularly with Virgin you are not surprised, after all, the Virgin group also owns a record label and other business that use copyright.

Anyway - I return from abroad and find that the UK started censoring. What's next!

I don't know how to setup Usenet for downloading material, so I'll have a go soon and report back how it works with Virgin.

I don't know what tips you received by PM but mine would be that the simplest way by far to avoid slow downloads is to avoid using protocols which are subject to shaping by VM. Apart from the standard volume based traffic management there is no protocol based limitation imposed on http or ftp downloads.

Please do not confuse a restriction on illegal activity that harms other people with censorship, that is a whole different ball game, even if the mechanism used for one could be used for the other.
Too often criminals hide behind the 'It's censorship of the Internet' banner. I am wholly opposed to any form of censorship, but I support the right of artists to be rewarded for their work.
