VM 10Mb Broadband still to be upgraded?

Howdy,

I've just moved into a shared house and the internet access, which is through Virgin Media, is provided by the landlord as part of the rent.

However, checking the connection we're getting just 10Mb on the cable broadband connection. I thought the minimum that Virgin did was 30Mb now and that everyone just got an automatic upgrade last year when they did the upgrades to a relevant new package (so 10Mb to 30Mb, 20Mb to 50Mb or 50Mb to 100Mb).

Does anyone know if this is correct? Or does the landlord need to contact Virgin to ask for the upgrade (which will probably be unlikely). There's 7 of us sharing the connection here and it's not very happy so an upgrade would be handy.

Just found the 'doublespeed' website on Virgin which says my area is being upgraded at the moment and should be finished by end of July.

In some cases people are on special deals so might not get the automatic upgrade, or it is one of the very small areas where more work is needed to bring the network up to the faster speeds. Certainly the speed upgrade programme has not finished.

Even in their own results they admit 9% are on a 2 or 10 Mbps service still.

that is quite concerning from a company that promotes & advertises superior broadband speeds to that of BT & Sky,

All it takes to get a faster speed is a phone call and the willingness to enter a new minimum term. Add in extra money and it can be a lot faster.

It's not taking the effort to understand what they have bought and how the system works.

VM prematurely announced the speed doubling - possibly to stave off an exodus to FTTC. All new customers were put on the new double speed products regardless of whether their areas ad been upgraded. To get the new doubled speeds early all that was necessary was to call in and complain that new customers were getting faster for the same money and you could get the doubled speed early (I did). VM were gambling on the majority waiting which is what seems to have happened.
