152MB Service - Anyone got this in South Manchester area?

[link to this post]

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has signed up for the 152MB service in M20 area? I am looking to sign up but just wanted to get some feedback on the quality of the connection and if there have been any issues with high utilisation?

Thanks

You may be better asking on the Virgin Media Forums if you haven't already.

I have just updated my signature as I am now with Plusnet. I have had FTTC now since it was released 3 years or so ago and the speed has slowly dropped. I did used to get a little more and also pings as low as 8ms but this has now crept up to 20ms.

I can only attribute this to the increase of subscribers in the area.

Any regrets moving from Virgin having had FTTC? What's the latency with Virgin like?

Depends on a street level in the M20 area. In my last property the speeds were good but the ping was very erratic. Took a long lonh time for Virgin to figure out and fix as well. I've generally never had an issue and always had good speeds and this expierence hasn't put me off but it might be worth seeing if the neighbours have it.

Tester is fine a fully bonded but needs two uploads to test, suggesting it is a load balancing solution you use

I don't think it's possible to bond at one end - it must be done at both ends. Per-packet load balancing on the other hand... smile

Thanks, I am based in Didsbury Village - I have posted on the VM forums but have not had any replies and have also not seen any recent posts complaining about speeds in the area which may be a good thing. I have checked with a few of my close neighbours and they either have ADSL or FTTC but I will check further down the street.

If I don't get anywhere I suppose I can just try it for 28 days and cancel it if I am not happy.

I have just signed up with installation for next Friday. I will see what the connection is like for a few weeks and make a decision. Topcashback were doing £147 cash back as well which is pretty good if I decide to stay.

you most more then liikely be on the Stretford CMTS (Cable modem termination system) but what number? i dunno
http://ukinternetreport.co.uk/cmts/details.php?area=... if you unlucky and on the stre6 side then at times you wont get 152Mb frown Also make sure you have the right power levels on the white coax cable from the point to the VM Modem, If the area is an old ex NTL then my reading read -2.9 dBmV and around that for the downstream's 1,2,3,4 and upstream reads 49 dBmv and fine and gives me 12Mb spot on.

1999-2004 Freeserve/Wanadoo Anytime 56K Dial-Up, 2005-2007 Legend Communications ISDN 128K (Childrens Home) 2007-2008 Telewest/Virgin Media 2Mb/256Kb -> 2009 4Mb/768Kb -> 2010 10Mb/1Mb -> 2011 100Mb/10Mb 2013 Sky ADSL+2 8Mb/920Kb

Do you only have 4 downstreams? I have 8 downstreams and 2 upstreams; I'm on the 100/6 service rather than your 152/12.

Thanks for the info, the installer has just been and gone and everything is up and running. He has told me I am connected to the Baguley CMTS and not Stretford. The initial speedtest I have run is giving me 157Mb/s Download, 12.19Mb/s Upload and latency of 10ms(http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3835975963). I think he also mentioned that the Baguley servers have just undergone a server upgrade so hopefully things will be stable at peak periods. I will keep an eye on it anyway. Cheers

Nice speeds and the norm for 152 in a stable area ( you might see 161-162 also)

I'm in Newport South Wales http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3836379024

You might also want to try outside the VM network - this is a good server to use (Custodian Datacentre)

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3836383320

As is this one.. Just to test raw speed. All well above the "headline speed" smile

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3836386040

Welcome to life in the fast lane smile

Thought I would do another test in the evening just to see what the speeds are like. My speeds have dropped to around 70 Down.

Anyone fancy deciphering my modem stats to see if there are any obvious issues?

Downstream Channels
Lock Status Channel ID Frequency Modulation Rx Power RxMER Pre RS Errors Post RS Errors

Locked 128 322750000 Hz 256 QAM -3.0 dBmV 37.9 dB 956 956

Upstream Channels
Lock Status Channel ID Frequency Modulation Tx Power Mode Channel Bandwidth Symbol Rate
NotLocked 0 0 Hz 0 dBmV 0 Ksym/sec
NotLocked 0 0 Hz 0 dBmV 0 Ksym/sec
Locked 5 45800000 Hz ATDMA 39.5 dBmV 16QAM 6400000 Hz 5120 Ksym/sec
Locked 7 27400000 Hz ATDMA 36.0 dBmV 16QAM 6400000 Hz 5120 Ksym/sec

If there are no issues with the stats then I wouldn't be surprised if the speed drop is due to congestion...

Cheers

Using our speed test http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html will give you throughput graphs to share, and you can then see if line is bursting high and slowing, a sign of congestion

Monitor your speeds over a few days testing at different times of day. You will then see a pattern if there is one.

Always ensure that you test under the same conditions, i.e with the same machine, running no other utilities, connected by cable to the router, no internet usage anywhere else in the house and using the same test server. Given what you said about not finding other VM users locally, it is unlikely that over-utilisation is occurring via your cabinet. It is more likely, if at all, at node level.

Thanks- I will do another speed test later, based on the one completed below what signs should I be looking out for that would indicate congestion issues?

Thanks - I will do exactly this. I still have my FTTC connection which everyone else in the house is connected to so I am able to do the tests uninterrupted connected directly to the SH2.

The fact that tbbx1 is lower than httpx6 and are wobbly rather than nailed to connection speed

Hi All,

Just to provide you with an update, I have noticed that download speeds definitely drop in the evenings to between 30 to 60 Meg.

I have just been informed that a fault has been opened recently to do with peak time utilisation and that the estimated fix date is 31/12/14.

I have been told I can cancel anytime before 16/11 with no penalty and if I do decide to stay they will give me 1 month free as well(also have £147 cashback). Does anyone have any previous experience with a utilisation issue that has now been fixed? How accurate are the fix dates or should I run for the hills and cancel now I have a chance? Thanks

Depends which revision of the date this is. When utilisation affected me it was the 3rd revision of the fix date that they met.
