Line Rental

I resent having to pay for line rental when my BB is delivered by cable. I'm very happy with the speeds I get with the BB and am happy with my TV package. So why do I have to pay for line rental? Virgin do offer a package without line rental but it is for BB only and does not include TV and it is priced unattractively.
Now that Vodafone have dropped the line rental requirement I'd like to see Virgin do the same so that I can save £17.99 a month.

You are aware that while Vodafone 'have dropped line rental' that you are still paying for it in the price of the service, i.e. just all rolled up into one figure.

Do you consider that 'cable' is not a form of 'line'?

No I don't. ADSL requires a landline. Cable does not.

Before long, Internet providers will be required to advertise a price that includes any necessary line rental if taking their line rental is a mandatory part of the package. Vodafone have simply got ahead of the pack.

Virgin can offer service without a phone line, as can any provider offering service over Openreach FTTP. ISPs providing service over Openreach FTTC must currently rent a line back to the exchange, but this should change when Openreach launch SOGEA, where a D side is rented and connected to the FTTC cabinet, but no E side is connected.

It is a commercial decision whether ISPs require you to take a voice service or not.

Virgin does not use Openreach.

The issue is wider than just Virgin and other providers that do not rely on Openreach last mile connectivity, hence the fuller explanation in my earlier post.

As I stated in my original post, yes, Virgin does offer BB without line rental but it does not include TV and the price is unattractive.
Since so many of us take packages that include TV as well as BB that is my point.
The non-Openreach providers make it difficult to get a package that does not include line rental.

Line Rental with VM costs £17.99 per month which is included in the first two options below.
They offer Fibre, Phone and TV for £27.99 for 9 months and then it costs £41.99
They offer Fibre and Phone for £29.99 for 9 months and then £36.99
Fibre only costs £32.25 a month. £9.99 activation fee.
